Re: CTA CARS ARE 100 YEARS OLD!

The 4000s had spur-cut gears. Music to my ears. I could always tell them apart from the 6000s when they'd go my grandmother's apartment in Edgewater by the sound of the motors, plus they clanked more than the 6000s.

I remember saying to my aunt how cool it would be to ride on an Evanston Express, to which she replied, "It doesn't stop anywhere!" Back in those days, Evanston Expresses ran nonstop between Howard and Merchandise Mart.

The 4000s, specifically the Plushies, became popular with trolley museums because they came ready-to-run, so to speak, with trolley poles. A pity that Shoreline wasn't able to reassemble 4280 after they got it. It still looked great back in 1980, but the last time I saw it in 2002, it looked pretty rough. Although I never rode on them in Chicago, I have ridden on the ones at IRM. They can gallop on the mainline; their gears often reach A-440.
