Not a disinterested party... but I applaud the engineers for forcing the issue. They pay the lowest wage in the area and cannot retain people they qualify. The state could certainly find some money to remedy that.

Couple questions from a fellow transit employee the answers of which I could not entirely glean from media reporting:


1. It is my understanding the operators/engineers at NJT, MN, and LIRR are paid a base hourly wage. Is that correct?

2. Is this simply an issue over wage parity relative to MN and LIRR or are there other benefits in play that impact QOL?

Yes. Hourly. NJT has two issues, one that an NJT engineer makes about 2/3 of a Metro North engineer hourly. The other that NJT engineers have historically been paid 10% above NJT conductors, and the railroad's offer would have discontinued this practice.
I have not heard anything about benefits or work rules, though the PEB did suggest the union trade work rules for more salary. I'd rather have the work rules. What's to keep the railroad from starting with a lowball offer the next time? And the work rule is gone forever.

I hope they get a fair raise and the strike doesn't drag on too long. They should get parity with the LIRR & MN. But if a the strike drags on, some "unintended consequences" might result. Such as more commuters joining the WFH crowd. When that happens, ridership goes down thus making for an excuse to cut service. Service cuts means layoffs. Its a double edged sword. Fine, you get a nice raise only to face the possibility of your job/run being abolished with ensuing layoff(s).
Lock both sides in a room over the weekend and don't come out until you've reached a deal

By what standard? Being a hogger is now a perpetual six-figure job?

This doesn't sit well with passengers who make lots less than that on average.

LIRR and MN do not have pay parity. All LIRR unions in fact, have better deals than MN.

NJ Gov. Murphy blasts striking NJ Transit union workers leaving 350,000 commuters in travel nightmare

New Jersey Gov. Phil Murphy ripped NJ Transit engineers for going on strike Friday — blasting their actions as a “slap in the face” to commuters and a “mess of their own making.”

The Democrat lashed out after roughly 400 rail engineers walked off the job after marathon contract talks stalled ahead of a midnight deadline, setting off the first strike to hit the major transit system in more than 40 years.

“It did not have to come to this,” Murphy told a news conference after the morning commuter rush got underway.

“A small handful of locomotive engineers have walked off the job and shut down our entire transit system,” he continued, adding that “we’re talking just under 400 engineers in a total workforce of about 12,000.”

“It is, frankly, a mess of their own making — and it is a slap in the face of every commuter and worker who relies on NJ Transit.”

Murphy urged the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers and Trainmen union (BLET), which represents the engineers who drive the agency’s commuter trains, to come back to the negotiating table.

“What the people of New Jersey need right now is for the members to meet their obligations to the public,” he said. “Let’s end the strike.”

“We are ready to restart negotiations, literally this second, but we need the BLET to come back to the negotiating table in good faith,” he added.

The union, for their part, blamed transit management negotiators for walking out of the bargaining talks late Thursday.

“We presented them with a deal and they walked away,” the union’s national president, Mark Wallace, said. “They chose to leave. We did not.”

Wages are the key sticking point of the strike, according to the union.

BLET had been seeking its first pay increase since 2019 for 450 of its engineers, a source familiar with the negotiations earlier told The Post, adding that NJ Transit could fully fund the sought increase with a seven-and-a-half-year contract for less than $30 million.

The union has said it was aiming to raise the engineers’ salaries to match those at other commuter railroads in the region – including Amtrak and the Long Island Railroad.

“For six years our engineers have not had a pay raise,” the union prez said.

“They make $10 less an hour than Long Island Railroad. They make $10 less an hour than Amtrak, Path, Metro North. They’re the lowest paid commuter engineers today in the United States.”

NJ Transit said the engineers currently make $135,000 on average and that management had offered a deal that would yield an average salary of $172,000 by 2027.

NJ Transit, however, has said it can’t afford the pay raises the engineers are seeking because 14 other unions that negotiate separate labor contracts with the agency would then demand higher wage rates for their members.

“I for one refuse to pass the buck or increase taxes on hard working New Jerseyans for the same, or even more likely, reduced service. That’s not going to happen. That is untenable,” Murphy said.

NJ Transit CEO Kris Kolluri said they got close to what the union was seeking on wages but raised concerns about the longer-term fiscal health of the transit agency.

“What’s the point of giving you a pay raise if a couple of years from now your job is not going to exist?” Kolluri said. “That’s sort of what we’re talking about in the most plain and simple terms.”

Murphy, meanwhile, argued that it wasn’t about politics.

“We’re holding the line for the next governor and the next administration so they do not inherit a NJ Transit that is on the brink of fiscal collapse, but is in fact in a strong state of health,” he said.

“That is what it means to fix NJ Transit, leaving the agency better in every respect, but especially in fiscal terms, than when we entered office.”

The next talks are scheduled for Sunday with the help of federal mediators.

Interesting. I thought that the LIRR/MNR engineers got equal pay. AFAIK It was the only union to get paid the same. All other MNR crafts got less than the LIRR crafts. That all started back in the late 60s when then Gov Rockefeller with his new MTA went on a mission to make the LIRR the "best commuter RR in the country". Back then, the LIRR unions got substantial raises to encourage membership to work for that goal.
Didn't quite work out that way.

But how long can this go on? Previous contact expired in 2019. They went through all these strike preventing governmental fact finding commissions ever since. These are well trained professionals. When others make an error in their jobs they can "use an eraser" to correct said mistake. When these guys make a mistake it can turn into a catastrophe. They cost of living is way high in this area. So are the taxes taken out of their check.

Governor just learned you can't run a train without an engineer. He may be talking tough now but he owns this strike. Holding the line for the next governor!!! As if anyone cares about that.

Right now the LIRR is the worst run of all the MTA agencies. Even NICE bus is run better.

And as I've said before, any idjut who had electric trains at Christmas time thinks he can run a real railroad. A T/O might have up to 3,000 people on his train that he's responsible for the safety of. They deserve what they get and more.

That depends on who you ask. As inconsistent as the service can be, it sure beats the hell out of sitting on the LIE or one of Robert Moses' poorly designed parkways. Basically, the LIRR is the only game in town. The only real competition the LIRR has is from Hampton Jitney on the east end's north and south forks.

It also depends on what metric is used to determine the quality of service. I tend to take statements like"worst run" with a well deserved grain of salt.

You do realize that NICE bus boasts of 16 million rides annually while the LIRR claims 5 times that amount. Now if you compare rider miles annually that number may be as much as 40 to 50 times as much.

Outside of selected time periods such as peak rush hour, driving is actually the same time or faster than the LIRR. Especially if you are not going anywhere that is near an LIRR station in NYC like Jamaica or Penn or GCT. If you need to transfer, the transfer penalty alone eats up any advantage the LIRR has over driving outside of let’s say 5 pm on a busy weekday.

But customer service responsiveness is much better on NICE. I find NICE bus operators more willing to provide faster service than NYC Transit even.

It’s also about workplace culture. The LIRR tends to have an us versus them mindset. The LIRR unions tend to act like police unions.

For the last few months I've been working afternoon Port Washington. It's like another world. No Jamaica, no skells with three teeth reeking of weed or meth. Some branches are constant problems, a lot of "fuck you, I ain't paying". The LIRR conductor is caught between that, a ton of stupid directives from an overly hands on management, and a crew book that seems to think we don't need to piss or eat. I wouldn't have lasted in that craft. Would have knocked some guy's last three teeth out.

What Allen does not mention is that the service has become far more reliable in recent years, mostly due to the added track capacity on the main line, and elimination of the constantly troublesome grade crossings between New Hyde Park and Hicksville. No one seems any happier on the trains, but it's true.

Any LIRR (or MNR conductor for that matter) would get fired for that. NYC transit comparisons are not valid here inasmuch as NYCT train personnel have much less public interaction than RR conductors in all the pax faces with their "all tickets please".
When I left MNR, there were a handful of "quality control" (aka spotters) people that rode the trains to check on conductors protection of revenue, announcements and general interaction with the passengers so if you get a "fuck you, I aint paying" customer, you try to have the cops meet the train at the next station. If they dont show? No big deal. You did your job and thats what they look for.

Farebeating is pretty rampant these days and the police response leaves alot to be desired. The conductors are frustrated and I don't doubt that some of them have occasionally said things like that to difficult customers.
If someone catches you at it, yeah, you'll have some dumb questions to try to answer the next day.

Almost every conductor is reasonably nice and normal and if you have your ticket ready for presentation there will be no issues, unlike whatever the other poster is insinuating. They have a tough job. I just drive things.

NYCT train personnel may have less interaction, but bus personnel aren’t like this. This comes down to agency culture. Metro-North had a more customer oriented culture and is the best agency the MTA has. LIRR can be very much us versus them and this reflects even on social media posts. I’ve also heard stories about people calling the LIRR and being hung up on too. Or the LIRR banning people who complain on Facebook, actually this person got incensed enough that they started an LIRR Facebook group and bans employees from joining. I personally know people offline who work for LIRR, MNR, NYCT and MTA Bus and have heard the same thing.

This has been an issue pre pandemic too and this is not just conductors. There’s even been people that work at LIRR headquarters in Jamaica known to behave condescendingly towards customers online. I know of one person who got trolled by a planner at LIRR for criticizing their operations. Say what you want about NYCT and MTA Bus, but not even Norman Silverman, the most condescending and arrogant planner from NYCT/MTA Bus did this. You never see Mark Holmes or Robert Lai or Cate Contino going online and trolling customers who criticize the agency. But there are people in LIRR ops planning who have done this.

I don't move in those circles. If your gripe is with the planners I would agree that no one is impressed by what they come up with. I would like to drop a note in the suggestion box that says "stop having ideas, they're all terrible." There is something mildly rotten with the LIRR culture but hopefully once the current group is put out to pasture it will be better.

Not necessarily. Any new recruits going to work for the LIRR will be trained/broken in by the group that's going "out to pasture". The PRR ghosts and their attitudes are still there at the LIRR HQ at Jamaica Sta.

Some of the new blood is OK and I hope they win out. I'm lazy, no interest in putting on a tie for another interview ever, but they hired some guys around the same time who wouldn't know the PRR if it bit them in the ass, and retained their humanity on the way up. No one can really control what happens after they're gone. Check back in a few years I guess...

TENTATIVE AGREEMENT REACHED - RAIL SERVICE RESTARTING TUESDAY 20th

NJ TRANSIT and the Brotherhood of Locomotive Engineers & Trainmen (BLET) have announced a tentative agreement. As a result, NJ TRANSIT train service will resume on Tuesday, May 20, as it takes approximately 24 hours to inspect and prepare tracks, rail cars and other infrastructure before returning to full scheduled service.

Supplemental bus service from four regional Park & Rides will be in place and operating on Monday, May 19 only. NJ TRANSIT will continue to deploy customer ambassadors at stations and Park & Ride locations to assist customers as train service restarts.

NJ TRANSIT strongly encourages all those who can work from home on Monday, May 19th to do so and limit traveling on the NJ TRANSIT system to essential purposes only.

The sides were close enough I thought they could meet somewhere in the middle. I'd be interested in the details once they come to light.
