Well, if they had stayed with Budd... The rehabbed PATCO cars are still running.

I was referring to the mixed-bag consists that became commonplace on the IND and BMT around 1969-70. Anything and everything was thrown together. I've read that this was partly due to an IRT trainmaster coming over to the IND/BMT.

The years of deferred maintenance of the subway cars finally started catch up. If it could move it ran, no lights, no problem. The doors don't work, no problem.

Yup. I went down to Philly to ride the then new trains and somewhere still have one of the electronic tix from the trip. Every time Jersey Mike posts pix I am reminded how lovely they are AND with rebuilt/replaced mechanicals I will be buried before they are scrapped. We lost a quality carbuilder during the period when no one was buying passenger cars+--mainline or transit. They were bought by a German outfit, and IINM the Philadelphia factory was closed down.

The mixed equipment was also to spread out air-conditioned subway cars so each IND/BMT line would at least have some of them.

The R-42s in particular. They wanted at least one air-conditioned set of cars in every train. I'm just glad I never saw any R-10/42 lashups. I would have thrown a screaming fit.

I think I saw everything mixed except R10s. But R12/14/15 were mixed in with everything else on the IRT, but then again there weren't any newer cars there either that would stand out.
