Posted by Bill Newkirk on Sun Apr 27 10:00:21 2025

The last of the series looking back when the R-46's were new.
Let's take a look when new R-46's were assigned to this airport express service long before JFK Airtrain.

Scan of brochure announcing this new service

Service started at the 57th St & 6th Ave station long before the opening of the 63rd St subway. #1212 was renumbered #6112 (September 1978)

"Train To The Plane" decals were applied to several units.

Spare train set laid up in tunnel just north of 57th St station. If I'm correct, the tunnel portal on the other side consisted of a plywood wall.

R-46 #1206 later renumbered as #6176 at Howard Beach - JFK station. (September 1978)

#1234 became #6214. (September 23, 1978)

In the beginning, the Howard Beach transfer point to catch the bus to JFK Airport afforded no protection from the elements. (September 1978)
image host

Advertised as the "Train To The Plane", the JFK Express was really the train to the bus to the plane. (September 1978)

The end bonnet #1244 [#6232] was repainted minus the black mask. (September 9, 1979)

At 88th St. [Boyd Ave.] (October 1978)

Remember the Nostalgia Special ? I photographed this aboard the special Rockaway bound near Aqueduct. (September 1979)

And for the last photo, from Liberty Junction tower. (September 1979)

Even for the local trains it was a premium fare? The fare wasn't $1.50 until the 90s.

Had to go back and make sure there was not a picture of an R-10 on the JFK Express as for a time the R10s were actually used on it when the truck fiasco hit the R-46s hard.

It looks like, when the JFK Express began, its color would have been PMS Process Blue, as the tint and shade look very much like that. When the color scheme for subway routes was overhauled in 1979, it would have been reassigned PMS 312 (previously in use on the 3, E and M trains).

But let me just say, lest anyone misunderstand: I certainly appreciate all these photos taken of those "when new" R-46's, as well as of other stock when first put on "the rails."

Was it only for boarding at that station? What if you were headed to the Rockaways? (I forget the timing for when the exit fares were being collected in the Rockaways).

The double fare ended in 1975 and the TTTP started in 1978.
