Let's take a look when new R-46's were assigned to this airport express service long before JFK Airtrain. Scan of brochure announcing this new service Scan of JFK Express ticket issued on May 4th, year unknown. Service started at the 57th St & 6th Ave station long before the opening of the 63rd St subway. #1212 was renumbered #6112 (September 1978) Strip map of scheduled stops of this route. "Train To The Plane" decals were applied to several units. Spare train set laid up in tunnel just north of 57th St station. If I'm correct, the tunnel portal on the other side consisted of a plywood wall. Rockaway Blvd enroute to Manhattan via the Liberty Ave el and Fulton St. Subway (June 1979) R-46 #1206 later renumbered as #6176 at Howard Beach - JFK station. (September 1978) Three car train with #1204 [#5972] and other units displaying the decals. (September 24, 1978) #1212 [#6112] showing controversial Rockwell HPT-2 trucks. (Septmeber 24, 1978) (CC) Rockaway shuttle awaiting the trip back to Broad Channel and all stops to Rockaway Park. #1236 later became #6236 (September 1978) #1234 became #6214. (September 23, 1978) In the beginning, the Howard Beach transfer point to catch the bus to JFK Airport afforded no protection from the elements. (September 1978) Advertised as the "Train To The Plane", the JFK Express was really the train to the bus to the plane. (September 1978) The end bonnet #1244 [#6232] was repainted minus the black mask. (September 9, 1979) At 88th St. [Boyd Ave.] (October 1978) Remember the Nostalgia Special ? I photographed this aboard the special Rockaway bound near Aqueduct. (September 1979) And for the last photo, from Liberty Junction tower. (September 1979) Thanks for tagging along.

When the color scheme for subway routes was overhauled in 1979, it would have been reassigned PMS 312 (previously in use on the 3, E and M trains). But let me just say, lest anyone misunderstand: I certainly appreciate all these photos taken of those "when new" R-46's, as well as of other stock when first put on "the rails."
