[PHOTOS] The R-46 Vol. 1 Looking Back

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Sun Apr 13 16:27:45 2025

Now that the first R-46's are being sent out for scrap, let's look back as they served New York City.

Let's start at the Pullman Standard plant in Pullman, IL. The distinctive blue stripe is yet to be added. #647 was renumbered to #5915 (Feb 18, 1978)

While riding the West End line, I caught the delivery of R-46's at 9th Ave. They ran on their own power to Coney Island yard.
The R-32 (RR) train was stored at 9th Ave. lower and was a put-in for the rush hour. (July 1978)

It's the R-46's turn to undergo general overhaul. Location is the Brooklyn Army terminal in Sunset Park, Brooklyn. (July 31, 1990)

Yep. Who would've thought, when the Rockwell trucks were giving MTA execs tsuris, that the 46's would have lasted this long? Of course, they looked their best pre-GOH and pre-renumberings.

Indeed, very nice coverage. Also nice to see the E-L SDPs.

Was this trip the only time 75Ft. cars rode on the Myrtle Ave line because two-way traffic on this curve would cause side swiping?

IIRC there was a sideswipe concern about the curve just west of the Marcy Ave Sta. leading to the Willy B. In addition, there was a question if 75ft cars could negotiate the curve at Crescent.

I remember when these appeared on the F Line in Queens in the mid 1970s. They replaced the last of the Arnines as well as the R32s. They were miraculous.

Great pics; thanks!
Like the R32s, 38s, 40s, 42s and 44s, once they were brand new cars, far more modern looking than the somber R1-9s they replaced, but now they also have become another page in the car history books.

This was a nice treat. Thanks for posting.

I remember when these cars made their debut. Never thought I'd see their departure or think of these cars as "nostalgic".

Excellent:

I remember when the CC had the R-46s due to the truck problems, and they usually then ran in six-car units.

Was a special adapter used to allow these two different car types
to mate up?

If so, what does it look like?

The photos below is when the R-46's were being delivered on the Brooklyn car float dock. (August 9, 1977).
The compromise adapter being carried adapts the R-46 Ohio Brass coupler to the knuckle coupler for the NY Dock Rwy switcher.
The adapter used in the photo I took would be for an Ohio Brass to H-2. Train Dude would know more about this.

Nice pic. I believe those compromise couplers weigh close to 80 pounds. IIRC all MN electric equipment carries one.

That adapter could weigh about 80 lbs.
