Graffiti culture

Posted by LuchAAA on Thu Mar 13 23:35:14 2025

Some people worship graffiti culture and idolize the vandals.

In 1984 I went to the Beat Street as soon as it came out. I wanted to have fun seeing locations, like Fresh Pond Yard, NYCTM, and all the different types of equipment.

What lines were most vandalized? What yards and layups were most vandalized?

I think the IRT was the worst. Probably the 2 and 5 trains took a beating. And they usually had full car, top-to-bottom spray paint jobs. I guess vandals knew 50ft cars needed less paint than 60ft and 75ft cars?

The R27/30 cars seemed to be the worst in the B Division. Vandals knew about City Hall on Broadway BMT. Fresh Pond Yard was considered an easy target. One time we stopped a softball game while kids ran from the yard then under a fence to the baseball field to escape. Guess someone chased them.

Graffiti is one thing I don't miss.

IMO, the 4,5,6 lines stick out in my mind, just as the GG R10s and Eastern Division R16s did as well.

The R-10's are always discussed and people admire IZ and hus tag. But I rarely see full car, top to bottom graffiti on the R-10.

Ditto R27/30 although once I saw full car job on the J.

The only reason I know about IZ is because people bring it up.

Grafitti on stainless steel didn't look as.good and until 1984 no IRT cars were made of it so the IRT got the brunt of the tagging.

All yards were vulnerable until they took the matter seriously beginning in 1984

I think some yards were riskier for vandals.

Westchester Yard
207 Yard
CIY
Jamaica Yard
Livonia Yard
Pitkin Yard
Corona Yard
240 Yard on the 1 line

Interesting point about stainless steel. I don't think that mattered. IRT got beat up because South Bronx was a graffiti hot spot and vandals wanted to target the neighborhood trains. If R62's came out years earlier they would have been destroyed.

Do you think the movie Beat Street motivated the MTA to up their game against vandals?

IIRC, Corona yard was surrounded by chain link and razor ribboned fencing with a concrete moat patrolled by dogs. After awhile, protests got loud and the dogs were removed.

Anyone with time to protest during working hours needs to be ignored.
If it's people with jobs or who are retired, that show up to a public feedback meeting at 7pm on a Thursday, I'd listen with care.
If they're part of an activist group, do whatever they don't want.

Who protested? Animal rights activists?

There are no residents anywhere near the yard.

I was watching trains at Harrisburg and a non-railfan friend mentioned that some of the tags on the autoracks were really good. Also, while still the minority, there's been a trend towards more mural art. Both of these observations makes me wonder if there's been an overall bump in quality compared to the 80s.

The mural work is definitely more elaborate now compared to the 80's.

That's the location that was written on the slide mount. Is this the 233rd St station ? If so, could this train be bearing incorrect signs ?

I used to think they were elaborate, until one that I thought was particularly creative on an autorack I later spotted on an ad for a terrible cartoon on showtime or some pay channel.
