VIDEOS: BALTIMORE METRO SUBWAY |
|
|
Posted by Jersey Mike on Thu Sep 12 00:25:56 2024 Here we have the videos that go with my main Baltimore Metro Subway post. Due to the impending replacement of the Budd built Universal Transit Vehicle's, I made time to take a round trip from Owings Mills to Johns Hopkins Hospital and back. Taking video through the forward facing windows, each trip was divided into two parts with the break taking place at West Cold Springs. The tunnel section sees speeds of mostly 40 and 50mph. ffhf While at Johns Hopkins I got a pair of videos of UTV trains departing and arriving. The UTV stock makes use of DC chopper type propulsion systems. The return trip was largely uneventful, but provided a different perspective. That's all for my Baltimore Metro Subway experience. I'll be back shortly with photos from ZOO interlocking's 36th St Jct. |

The turnouts in the crossovers south of the Owings Mills station used for relaying trains at the terminal station are #16. They are the only #16 turnouts on the Baltimore Metro Subway.John in the sand box of Maryland's eastern shore. |

The type of tech used on these cars is similar to what Budd wanted to implement on the R-62A order had they won the contract. This subway system was intended to extend much further with multiple lines that were never built. It is sad that Miami didn't preserve a single pair of their Budd UTVs as all of those have been scrapped and removed from property, the final surviving pairs sat on the Dadeland tail tracks in 2023 before being removed. Fortunately about 13 hours of footage exist on YouTube of their final weeks in service in 2020 by Yours Truly. Curious to see what Baltimore's Hitachi replacements look like in person and how soon they'll begin testing and entering service. |

I think the only time I rode the Metro would be soon after it opened.--maybe a B&O RR Soc Convention visit. I had forgotten how much the elevated segments wiggled like snakes. |

Makes sense, but also puzzling since #15's are the standard size and also if they cared so much about terminal capacity they should have put the crossover closer to the platform as that distance sets the minimum possible headway. |

Makes sense, but also puzzling since #15's are the standard size and also if they cared so much about terminal capacity they should have put the crossover closer to the platform as that distance sets the minimum possible headway. The curve beyond the inbound end of the station platform makes placing those crossovers closer impractical. The 2 crossovers are longer then the curve. There also is the issue of the reduction of the track centers in the curve. Most heavy rail transit systems built anew during the second half of the last century use #10 in their terminal interlockings with the points of the turnouts no more then 2 car length from the inbound end of the platform. Terminal capacity headway is a wash because moves through #15 can be done at a higher speed then #10. The interlocking can be cleared and reset allowing the inbound train to depart before the outbound train berths at the platform. Had the Baltimore Metro been fully built out, 3:00 headways would have likely been the norm during peak, typical peak headways today are more then twice that. |
