It's fun dissecting some scenes. After Mr Blue electrocutes himself, Walter Mathau jumps down from the benchwalk to the tracks. I think it was really him and not a stunt man. At the beginning, Mr Green gets on at 59/Lex. He enters from the uptown platform then uses the underpass to downtown trains. Why not just go to the downtown entrance? And when the train comes it's an R26 instead of an R22. The train stops at 59 and "dumps", breaks-in-emergency most likely to go into the relay and back to the yard. |

Then it's the lead motor as Pelham pulls into "28th St." Then as hijacked train leaves, the last car is misnumbered. When 7339 leads Pelham into "28th St.," its front destination sign has wide Brooklyn Bridge lettering. Then when it comes to a screeching halt after being tripped by a timer at the vert end, the front destination sign has much narrower lettering. When Pelham first enters 59th St., there is a noticeable gap between the rear section of the tran and the platform as Bud Carmody closes down. Then as he closes the front section, there is no gap between the train and the platform. |

The trouble with the 3rd rendering, aside from the very obvious technical gaffs, was John Travolta. Where Robert Shaw was measured but menacing, John Travolta played an "over the top" psychotic - the same way he played over the top psychotic in Swordfish and Broken Arrow among many others. I also found the subplot of Denzel Washington's characters dishonesty, a needless distraction. |

The getaway in the second rendition was true to the novel. If you've read it, the "gimmick," as it was called, consisted of a heavy iron mold, cast in the shape of the controller, which fit over it. There were three lengths of pipe, one of which fit tightly into the mold over the controller. The other two were joined loosely to the first length and were angled towards the cab side of the car, so that when the controller was moved to series (mot multiple or parallel), the two loose pieces could be pulled loose. But in order to join the pipes together, the front cab window had to be broken out. No doubt the TA put the kebosh on busting out a window on an active R-22. OTOH the Toronto cars used in the 1998 remake were about to be scrapped anyway, so chances are the TTC didn't care what happened to them. |

The Paris Theater on 58th St recently did a 1974 retrospective and I saw this for the first time on the big screen. A real treat to catch it in a packed theater (nearly sold out on a Sunday afternoon) on 35mm. Great crime thriller, and the subway details are close enough (the thing that bothered me the most was the obvious curve on what is a straight tunnel) that I couldn't bring myself to be upset with the inaccuracies. |

You're going to find continuity mistakes in every movie. There are quite a few in the "French Connection" car/train chase, but that didn't matter or detract from the excitement as you watched it again and again.Didnt stop it from walking away with a handful of Oscars either. |

The scene where Motorman Doyle is walking passengers on the roadbed back to 28th Street. I'm guessing that those were transit workers getting some cash as extras. At the end Mr Blue and Mr Grey get into another dispute, in the emergency exit, as they are escaping. I think Mr. Grey was going to shoot all three of his partners in crime but Mr. Blue shot him first. |

Mr. Grey refuses to give up the machine gun, saying he wants "heavy artillery in case they're waiting".Grey seems to point his gun at his cohorts but Blue shoots first. Grey was probably planning to shoot all three others to take their money and not worry about someone getting caught and switching. |
