The getaway in the second rendition was true to the novel. If you've read it, the "gimmick," as it was called, consisted of a heavy iron mold, cast in the shape of the controller, which fit over it. There were three lengths of pipe, one of which fit tightly into the mold over the controller. The other two were joined loosely to the first length and were angled towards the cab side of the car, so that when the controller was moved to series (mot multiple or parallel), the two loose pieces could be pulled loose. But in order to join the pipes together, the front cab window had to be broken out. No doubt the TA put the kebosh on busting out a window on an active R-22. OTOH the Toronto cars used in the 1998 remake were about to be scrapped anyway, so chances are the TTC didn't care what happened to them.
