Its evolving that the train operator runs a computer while the computer runs the train.

Yes, and it's disappointing that in this video the #7 operator didn't address that aspect. As long as you're using a t/o from the #7 or L line, you may as well take advantage of their new responsibilities and explain them.

In general, do T/Os start their time at MTA with that position or do they work through other related positions first? I get the impression that the two featured T/Os just went right from some other non-transit job to driving the trains.

It's civil service. Used to be the test for T/O was not open competitive and promotional only.

Back in the 80's I took the combined Bus Operator/Conductor test and of course Bus Operator I was called for first then two years later for Conductor.

Then they opened up Train Operator to open competitive and people took the test "off the street".

Here is the notice from the February 2009 Promotional Train Operator Test:

Here is the notice from March 2009 Open Competitive Test:
https://www.nyc.gov/assets/dcas/downloads/pdf/noes/200808098000.pdf

Promotion Qualification:
At the time of promotion from the eligible titles of Conductor, Tower Operator or Bus Operator, you
must be either permanently employed in one of these titles or your name must appear on a Preferred List

at least one year.

Open Competitive:
Education and Experience Requirements: By the last day of the Application Period you must have:
1. A four year high school diploma or its educational equivalent, approved by a State’s Department of Education or a recognized accrediting organization; and

2. Five years of full-time, paid satisfactory work experience.
College education may be substituted for experience on the following basis: One year of acceptable experience will be credited for each 30 credits completed at an accredited college, up to a maximum of four years. However, all candidates must have at least one year of full-time satisfactory, paid work experience. Part-time paid experience will be pro-rated.

What's wrong with "train driver" like they say in England?

Operator has become such a vague term that is applied to so many jobs. If a job can be distinguished by a more descriptive term I support.

Motormen down here are rare indeed...

Motormen are able to troubleshoot AND correct problems with these trains without waiting for a RCI or a TSS with not even six years on the Job telling them "How its done per schoolcar"....

Pre Opto. Operating an elevated/subway train. Trouble shooting. Being alert. Knowing the station stops. Reading signals. Reading switchpoints.

Post OPTO. In addition to the above Opening and closing the doors. Computer programmer. Fireman. Giving travel information. Baby sitter. Assisting wheel chair passengers. Making sure the train is clean. Manually calling out the station stops in case the automated announcements are out of order, Firefighter. Making sure the route/destination signs are working.

And how much in premium pay did we receive? Close your eyes.

The word "drive" has multiple definitions. In one definition the motor drives the train but in another the operator drives the train. Conductors also "operate" the train by opening and closing doors, yet they don't drive the train. The words are similar enough to say that a train driver operates a train or conversely a train operator drives a train.

Nowadays I guess the easiest thing is to add operator to whatever equipment you work: train, crane, computer, plant, forklift, truck, radio, etc. If you're in military special forces you may also be called an "Operator."

I guess that flying is even more convoluted. It can mean the act of traveling through the air, like what planes and Superman do. Or it can mean being on a plane and traveling through the air. We can fly but when on an airplane we can be "flying". Or it can even be used interchangeably with the word piloting.

I doubt anyone loses sleep over such words. I don't but language is mildly interesting to me. Some words do trigger some people and maybe they do lose sleep when they hear them. "Gender" is an example.
