Nostrand Avenue A & C Subway Station Tour |
|
|
Posted by Transportation Hub on Fri Jan 6 20:20:49 2023 In the first video of 2023, we will be taking a tour of the Nostrand Av station on the IND Fulton St A & C Lines located in Bedford Stuyvesant, Brooklyn. In early 2021, the Bedford Av entrance of the station was reopened after being closed for three decades due to high rise of crime in the 80s and early 90s. The Bedford Av entrance provides customers direct access to the N/B B44 & B44-SBS to Williamsburg and the Franklin Av Shuttle one block west. It also provides transfers between northbound and southbound service on the A and C Lines. Enjoy the tour! |

Unlike the Bedford-Nostrand (G) station, which is located precisely between Bedford Av & Nostrand Av on Lafayette Av, the Nostrand (A/C) station on Fulton St extends east of Nostrand Av, though there's no exit there, most likely because the previous station, Franklin Av (C), is so close to Bedford Av. Because the station extends east of Nostrand, the passageway from the west end of the Nostrand station to the Bedford exit extremely long. In fact, along Fulton St, Franklin Av is so much closer to Bedford Av than Nostrand Av is to Bedford Av, that riders seeking Bedford Av are better off exiting at the Franklin Av station than the Nostrand Av station, and they probably do when the express is not running. When they re-opened that passageway to Bedford Av, they chose not to re-open the stairs up to Arlington Place. When you walk in the passageway you can see where those stairs are, hidden behind newly-tiled walls. Since the entire passageway is outside fare control, I don't understand why they didn't reopen those stairs too. ![]() ![]() "Arlington Pl" signs covered up: ![]()

The astute student will note at the 22:02 segment, the ceiling structure reveals where a possible stair could have been added at a later date. Many IND stations had these potential add-ons where platform-to-mezzine stair could be added. |

Great video, as are all of yours, but can you please leave the text on the screen longer. It's impossible to read a screen full of text in 3 seconds. Read the text thru once and then half again and that will tell you how long to leave it on the screen. Loot at how Dakota Gentry does his. He's got the timing about right. Again, thanks for the vids. |

When the City decided to make Nostrand Ave an express station, there were plans to build a line under Bedford Ave with a free transfer between the lines. An express stop at Franklin Ave would have been a shorter transfer walk. However, the City "rebuilt" Nostrand Ave from a local stop to an express one because of plans for a satellite business district, centered at Fulton & Nostrand. The City even enticed the Brevoort Savings Bank to build their headquarters on the site of the old Fulton Theater there. Unfortunately, nobody else followed their example. |

Sometimes those ceiling differences indicate where a staircase was removed, not a provision for a future staircase. When the 14 St (A,C,E) mezzanine was reconfigured and the 17 St exits were eliminated, new stairs up from the platform were added and old ones removed. Because the pillars at that station's island platforms are in the center of the platforms instead of at the platform edges, there are gaps between the pillars where the stairs were removed, along with ceiling differences there. Where the stairs were added, there are pillars in the staircases, because they were added later, after the original construction. ![]()

Wow! and Double Wow!I am guessing Lafayette Avenue was selected for its multiple number of gaps where switch turn outs are located to allow for the U-turn. Still taking that huge number of fume belching autos underground was a very unhealthy idea. |

South of Lafayette Avenue there is a spur middle track (A5/A6) with crossover switches between Express tracks A3 & A4, and between local and express tracks south of the station. There is similar civil construction with a middle spur track south of Utica Avenue. |

Making Franklin Ave. the express station would also have been better because it- would provide a transfer between the express and the Franklin Ave. Shuttle, and - would result in more even spacing of express stations (every third station between Hoyt-Schermerhorn and Broadway Junction). Of course, the first point might not have been regarded as a positive one by the IND's builders. |

Correct.Where the line crossed Lafayette Ave, a partial station box,and tunnel structure was built by the IND for the very same subway route. It's too bad there isn't much more available publicly about this route, other than the DRIGGS AVE portion in Williamsburg, that eventually received the green light for being built, but never moved to that phase. All I got to see was the plans and drafting materials. |

There is just that, only a station shell provision but unlike Utica no actual station shell. I mane mention of this on Youtube after seeing the video and the producers of the video are unaware of the proposed Bedford Ave subway. |

Not only did the planners for this satellite business district misjudge the express stop at Fulton/Nostrand, they also messed up on Lafayette Ave. The "GG" wound up running under Lafayette Ave because they thought that the downtown Brooklyn shopping area would expand east along Fulton St and along Lafayette Ave. The "GG" could have run to Franklin/Fulton, with a post-Unification routing to Prospect Park, and beyond. |

Posted by Edwards! on Tue Jan 10 16:21:40 2023, in response to Re: Nostrand Avenue A & C Subway Station Tour, posted by Elkeeper on Mon Jan 9 20:54:00 2023. The routing the IND intended to use was Union, Throop and Gates Ave,to Fulton st.Why this was changed, was due to the original agreement to use Lafayette Ave, and the link to a Beford Ave subway to Driggs Ave and Lower Manhattan. The route was also changed to Schemerhorn from Livingston to reduce the cost of the transition curve, less property to aquire. The Nostrand Ave station was redesigned as a boost to urban planning. The particular strip was enhanced with businesses, and today is a sure sign of how developers look forward. While Nostrand/Fulton did not "develope" in the manner some could conclude as successful, the thriving Business Associations would put snatch the lie right out of the mouths of the distracted. However, the bigoted assumptions are just that..bigoted assumptions that I'm certain nobody honestly cares about. In any case, the Nostrand complex is an important transfer point for bus and subway riders...with Food, restaurants groceries, clothing and tech stores available. Plenty of transportation available, even a convenient connection to the LIRR. |
