Seeing both of them in tandem, this story read out like a Final Destination scene. Just witnessing one of those in and of itself would be brutal enough (for me at least).I was about to say that the MTA should put some kind of passenger-accessible third rail-shutoff safety mechanism in stations for situations like this, but riders would probably abuse it. |

There are such devices every 500-600 feet in the tunnels and outside of every station. I saw my first 12-9 at about 16 years of age riding to school. I can still remember the grimace on the guys face but the smell of burning flesh never leaves you. That said, after 30 years and responding to countless 12-9s, neither seems disturbing to me now. |

Smelling burning flesh? F@#$ that! I've come across a couple of dead bodies in my hotels over the years, but usually from heart attacks or natural causes, not being splattered like a watermelon. Aside from that though, my railroad friend and his co-workers share the same sentiment as you, they only tend to remember two types of these incidents: The first time they struck someone, and the worst time they struck someone. |

Saddest part of my career wasnt the 12-9s I went through personally but watching a stray German Shepherd north of Euclid at the diamond hit the third rail on PM rush around 1993 working the C. Growing up near the Sea Beach open cut, I was amazed at the cats going under the 3rd rail, their backs seeming to be almost touching the rail itself, but nothing happening to them. |
