Holiday train will make express stops only

Posted by zac on Fri Dec 2 19:39:55 2022

Just got an email from the TM and for the next 3 weekends the train will make express stops only. It will stop at Chambers, 14th, 34th, 42, 72, 96, 125, 137.

I didn't ride last weekend, were there crowds slowing it down too much at each stop?

Its the changing of cars on the platform at each stop. Pax running from one car to the other trying to make it before the doors close or more likely doors close on them.
It was crazy the one trip I did, every stop people running on the platform over regular customers. Added a new dimension to the normal stares at the strange train. Now you had stares at the train and stares at the strange people running from car to car.
I know it happens when there is a smell on one car but this was multiple cars people running this way and that.

Happened on the first day, when I boarded the 2:00pm uptown run at 42nd Street-Times Square inside R-33WF car #9308, and it went express, with the additional stop at 59th Street-Columbus Circle, a major transfer point with the IND "A", "C" and "D" trains. I heard on the first day that a disruptive passenger was thrown out and off the train too!

The TM crew made that decision midway through the runs during the day to speed it up, and not clog up the regular #1 train local schedule. Also, even now going limited express on the local track, the Holiday train at a reduced speed bypassing stations becomes a rolling advertising billboard for the NYTM.

There was a delay because of some road work on the northern end of the line.

A year or two after they implemented the policy of no moving between cars within a train, I was on the holiday train at Queens Plaza, and I specifically asked a policeman on the train if it was OK to move between cars on THAT train, and he said yes. I guess the MTA higher-ups have overruled that.

Looking at past Holiday Train videos, the storm doors on the IND old timers were kept open between cars. You could see people moving freely from car to car.

I always did, and still do, especially when I'm shooting videos. At my age, being a life long NY'er, I can negotiate the cars relatively safely.
What bothers me is when the "youthful" looking folks with their little kids go parading through the cars fearless of any gaps that be present.
That's where MTA personnel need to put their foot (feet) down.

Passing between cars was taken for granted in the old days. Nobody gave it a thought. It was only on the standards where you couldn't do that, and then much later on the R44/46 and also the R68. On the R1/9 holiday train everybody acted the way we always did on those.

Before air conditioning, the storm doors were kept open in the summer by latches on the door frame. When the latch was extended horizontally, it caught the hook on the door latch and the door stayed open. When the door frame latch was folded down, it didn't catch the door latch and the door closed automatically. No one gave walking between the cars a second thought, especially when they were kept open.

Even the R62s came with those door frame latches that could keep the storm doors open, even though they were all air conditioned. Eventually the door frame latches were removed, but the two holes in the frame were evidence that the latch used to be there.

Reminds me of the time I was riding in an R-21 or R-22 mid-train. It was a hot summer day, and I noticed that the storm door at the front of the car (based on the direction we were traveling) was closed. I went over to open it and discovered that the latch was either missing or not working, I forget exactly which. Then a light bulb went on, and I opened the storm door window. Wasn't as good as having the whole door open, but it definitely helped.

For a time, until safety gates were installed, the slant R40s had the doors locked.
We loved riding between the slopes before the safety stuff was added. Quite a thrill.
Although we were seasoned subway riders, and held onto the grab irons or door handles, there were some who didn't; some paid a price.
The Holiday trains have TM people at the car ends to discourage passage. Those ones with little kids are worrisome. If they don't hold onto their hands, that's courting trouble.

R-17: I remember riding the Lo-V on the Lexington Avenue Express in the days before a/c. We would ride in between the cars until the train came out of the tunnel. Nowadays we would probably be arrested for that.

That was another thing. If you were lucky the train had an R21/22 in front where the window was easy to open. You'd see the R16 and R17 sometimes too with it open. Nowadays the air in the tunnels in the summer is hot from the AC.

My friends and I would always ride 'tween cars, no matter the type, on warm days. No one dared climb the safety chains to get on or off the train.
I always enjoyed the storm door being opened and watching the safety chains swing back & forth, especially on the LoVs barreling along the expresses.

My fondest subway memories are riding at the open RFW of an R-21 or R-22. Not just for the breeze, but the sounds. Especially on the 2 to Newlots Av when going to my grandmother's house.

Bill, has the terminology changed at some point?
When I was growing up, the RFW was the window on the extreme left of the car. The center was the storm door window.
In either case, the drop down windows on the AB/D types were terrific, especially before sealed beam headlights were installed. Looking out the fronts, there was no glare back from the car's interior lights, and the dark tunnels added to the excitement, like being in the fun house of an amusement park. With the AB's having a very small anti-climber, we could actually feel like part of the train itself, with our heads out the window.
Riding over the Manhattan Bridge to Brooklyn, we could feel being swallowed up as the train entered the dark tunnel, hearing every wheel click over the rail joints.
Just not the same anymore.

You are correct in that technically the RFW is one extreme left side. However, since on newer cars there was no such window on the end bulkheads, the storm door window came to be known as the RFW.

Yeah, that is indeed 157th Street, since it has a lower ceiling that 137th Street. Here is what that original 137th station looked like in 1005, before it received the CCNY designation in 1918 (with a newer mosaic tablet). From the collection of the nycsubway.org website...
