Before air conditioning, the storm doors were kept open in the summer by latches on the door frame. When the latch was extended horizontally, it caught the hook on the door latch and the door stayed open. When the door frame latch was folded down, it didn't catch the door latch and the door closed automatically. No one gave walking between the cars a second thought, especially when they were kept open. Even the R62s came with those door frame latches that could keep the storm doors open, even though they were all air conditioned. Eventually the door frame latches were removed, but the two holes in the frame were evidence that the latch used to be there. |
