Question about Rockaway Beach LIRR line.

Posted by LuchAAA on Sat Dec 3 05:58:25 2022

Was wondering about the old LIRR Rockaway Beach line.

It splits from the mainline in Rego Park. From there it's two tracks all the way to south of Atlantic Ave.

In Ozone Park it's four tracks until Howard Beach.

Does anyone know why LIRR planners designed the line this way?

Extra traffic from the Atlantic branch.

That seems logical.

But it's still alot of track to invest in.

True...would be interesting to see if the LIRR ever ran regular express service bypassing all the "local" stations...

They must have. I know I’ve read it was a 35 minute trip from B116 to Manhattan
