A strange thing: Long Beach Transit in Southern California, who was a big RTS user (they were the launch customer for the RTS-01 in 1977, and received the 10,000th RTS in 1985 (#4477, was part of an order of 14, GMC arranged for them to get #10,000 by itself, and the remainder of the order (4478-4491) arrived in 1986. Those were the final buses LBT ever received from GMC, as the next order was for 27 RTS-06, 1989 models which arrived early in 1990). Anyway, they ordered some -08s (19 each in 1992 and 993), but even with the wide front door, the w/c lifts were still in the back. WTF?!? Why didn't they just get more -06s? It turned out to be academic, as they then decided to go low-floor, so the next order was for 20 New Flyer D40LFs in 1994 and that was the end of RTS for LBT. |

Yes, that (The JBL Grumman 870 sighting) makes sense. After NYCTA got rid of their Grumman 870s for good.... Interesting enough they continued to operate at the DOT privates. Same for MSBA, and they also purchased Flxible Metros. By the early 90s the Grummans at the DOT privates were gone, except a few at Jamaica Buses that they continued to operate for several more years. |

The Grummans were indeed in service before the first RTS group. In fact when te RTS started arriving... The Grummans were well on their way to re-entering service after the A-frame retrofits. |

While I had heard of the RTS story of LBT having both #1 and the 10,000th RTS.... I didn't know the part about the purchasing the 08/WFD version. I agree... If they were keeping the lift in the exit door.... they should've just purchased the 06 series. Maybe they really wanted the wider front entrance??? |

The 1981 04 models had the lifts. The privates got a smaller batch of 03 models in 1979 with plug doors and no lifts. They were 8 cylinders though and could haul along. |

Coliseum had some RTS buses in the beginning though not many as it was mostly a Grumman depot. I do remember being at Pelham Bay seeing a mix of Grummans, New look Flxes and an occasional RTS in the mix. |
