Gimbels Passageway approved!

Posted by rbseabeach on Mon Sep 26 10:12:53 2022

I just read in YIMBY that the Penn Station redevelopment plan was approved anda it will include an underground passageway to the 34th Street Herald Square Station.
This is great news.
Does anyone have any additional information on this?
Thank you

I hope to remain healthy enough to use it once it's done.

But I'm not that confident. The Times Square to 6th Ave passageway was announced as being complete* in the early 2010s, but only actually became available for use in 2022.

* I think there is an out of system passage under the (then) new building on the north side of 42nd, which never got opened, for whatever reason.

When done I hope there is some security there. It's a long block in length unless there is an exit mid way.

I did mention this awhile back.
It's a damn well thought out decision that should have been done a long time ago.

The smart play would be to retrofit some retail in there ala Columbus Circle. Kills two birds in one stone by generating revenue whilst improving safety.

i remember once back in the late 70's i had tagged a wall (using a black shoe polish bottle) in that tunnel. (yeah, i was into graffiti) a few minutes later two cops came along and i guess they suspected me. so they searched me and due to all the shit i had in my pockets, papers, paper towels, other crap) they couldn't find the shoe polish or a marker so they let me slide.

glad they didn't search my socks, which was where i kept my bag of weed.

To do that they'd have to widen the passageway, I think. Not sure if that's feasible.

From what I heard (from here), when the MTA planned to revamp the shuttle station, they realized that the passageway would have to go down and under to reach the new shuttle platform, which was apparently more expensive than just converting track 3 to a passageway. Otherwise, the passageway probably didn't go far enough to reach Times Square station. It does explain why, for years, there was a station entrance globe on the north side of 42nd St, between 6th and 7th Ave., but no sign of a station entrance.
