From what I heard (from here), when the MTA planned to revamp the shuttle station, they realized that the passageway would have to go down and under to reach the new shuttle platform, which was apparently more expensive than just converting track 3 to a passageway. Otherwise, the passageway probably didn't go far enough to reach Times Square station. It does explain why, for years, there was a station entrance globe on the north side of 42nd St, between 6th and 7th Ave., but no sign of a station entrance. |
