They have more sense than a young person from an upper middle class backgrounds who went to a fancy college for a liberal arts degree, ran up $150,000 in student loans which can't be discharged in bankruptcy, and is now one of 200 applicants for an unpaid internship.

I both agree and disagree. The pricing of privatye colleges is tottally out of line. I brlieve the entire Fed loan debt should be written off. (it is a rounding error in what we waste at DoD)
That said, I spent 3 semesters at a very liberal arts school. The background from there is still useful nearly 6 decades later. After I left I did some night school, worked in retail, and then became a self taught electrician--definitely working class. Over the last 25 years I have audited nearly 40 courses at Cal Berkeley--mostly in nistory which was always what I considered my 'major field.'

As to employment opportunities, we have finally reached an employee's market where the greedy corporations are being fiorced to offer better
wage and benefits packages. In turn, while not every union action is perfect, I support their efforts to organize the underpaid service sector.

Name tablets for 23rd St.-Ely Ave. and Van Wyck Blvd. remain, even though those stations have officially been renamed Court Square-23rd St. and Briarwood. So the same thing could be done at Bleecker, but I don't expect it. The conflict between what the tablets say and what the "official" name is would be more confusing than just leaving things as is.

Not at all. Those of us old timers who grew up in the area 149st and Concourse was a special place for us. This is about the name change and nothing else. I hired tons of people who went to Baruch, City College, Lehman, Kingsborough. I even met DR Roscoe Brown from Bronx community college great guy All good institutions. I have hunch why changing the name now (won't get into here) but then why not change 23rd street on Lex to 23rd-Baruch.

What and where is Ely?

A very large number of numbered streets and avenues were named streets and avenues before the Borough of Queens was formed, and eventually many of them got numbers. So 100s (1000s?) of streets originally were named for people locally considered important in the 19th and earlier centuries.

Two more guesses:

1. The nearest Yeshiva building is farther from the subway station than is the case for most of the other colleges. For example, even though no one would claim that NYU is located at 8th and Broadway, there are in fact NYU buildings very close at hand.

2. Private institutions have to pay to have the subway station named after them, and Yeshiva didn't pay.

Ely Avenue is the former name for 23rd Street in Long Island and Astoria. Between 1915 and 1926 Queens street names were changed to eliminate duplication and rationalize a boroughwide numbering system. Even though the Long Island City area changes were implemented in 1925, the 23rd Street-Ely Avenue station opened in 1939 reflecting the former name. Some on this board have suggested that it was to avoid confusion with the Eighth Avenue line's 23rd Street in Manhattan.

the 23rd Street-Ely Avenue station opened in 1939 reflecting the former name.

And the Liberty Avenue segment of the A still put the old street names on its station signs, which would have been circa 1956 IIRC. Though there they might just have been continuing the practice of the former El.

Right. But the el opened in 1915 which is why the old street names were reflected in the station names. By contrast the later Jamaica El eschewed the old names even though it was only a few years later (1917 or 1918).

Nope. I was raised by a Holocaust survivor who was orphaned at 14 and came face to face with Josef Mengele. She didn't see her surviving siblings from January 1944 until July of 1958, when she came to America.

Studies have been made of the mental and emotional disorders of the children of Holocaust survivors. There is evidence to suggest that the change in brain chemistry of Holocaust survivors caused by the horror of the camps can be passed on to children. My mother, her two surviving sisters and many others believed that another Holocaust in this country is inevitable. That belief, perhaps somewhat watered down, was passed on to me. So, the persecution complex is real, and it is also not my fault.

Does that answer your question?

Probably because the 23rd St station is on Park Ave So, while Baruch is all on the east side of Lex.

When you come out of the 149th St station, Hostos is right there. Ditto for Columbia. Ditto for NYU if you come out at one of the Waverly Place entrances. Not so for the 23rd St station.

Are you off your medication or something?

I attended the schools that were available to me. I've been continuously working part-time or full-time since I was 16, when my dad died. I paid my own way through college and law school. I never took a dime from anyone that I didn't earn. Nobody handed me money.

I am not a card-carrying member of anything. I am an independent voter. I have voted Republican and I have voted Democrat. I detest hypocrisy and arrogance, regardless of which side of the aisle it emanates from.

I have never waved any "white plight flag". Why would I? I am not sure what you are referring to you when you say "my own race". I'm a Jew and a lot of people don't consider me to be Caucasian, despite my skin color.

I will say that you are a major hypocrite. You cry crocodile tears over the plight of blacks in this country, but have no concern for other persecuted people.

And I have not brought death.

Serves me right trying to explain anything to an imbecile like you.

I have an idea. Why don't you just ignore my posts? This way we'll be happier. You won't have to deal with me and I won't have to read your horseshit. If this site had 21st century technology, I'd have blocked you a long time ago.

It looks like Hostos wanted this and convinced a sympathetic state legislator. YU could do the same, but probably doesn’t want to.
At the risk of sounding elitist, it appears that Hostos needs the advertising, and YU doesn’t.

How does Hostos need the advertising?

Look up where Medgar Evers College is relative to the two stations named after it. Baruch is much closer to 23rd/Park.

And I can't figure out why Evers gets two stations.

23 St is the number name of Ely Ave, and 21 St is the number name of Van Alst Ave. Inexplicably at 23/Ely the black wall tiles show both 23 and Ely, but at 21/VanAlst they show only 21:

On the Flushing Line's Queens Blvd viaduct, the stations (opened in 1917, possibly before the re-naming) originally showed only the name, not the number:

1960:

Nowadays many #7 stations continue to show both, though from the hyphenated station signs you can't tell that "69 St - Fisk Av" and "90 St - Elmhurst Av" mean two different things. At 69 St both are names for the same street, but at 90 St those are two different streets that are both accessed at the station.

By the way, Brooklyn's hyphenated "Clinton-Washington" and "Hoyt-Schermerhorn" on both the A and G mean completely different things.

You’re the one who just admitted to being mentally ill. If you don’t like your mental illness to be coddled, maybe you should find a safe space.
