Almost like the old time station names like 23d/Ely. What and where is Ely?

Ely Avenue is the former name for 23rd Street in Long Island and Astoria. Between 1915 and 1926 Queens street names were changed to eliminate duplication and rationalize a boroughwide numbering system. Even though the Long Island City area changes were implemented in 1925, the 23rd Street-Ely Avenue station opened in 1939 reflecting the former name. Some on this board have suggested that it was to avoid confusion with the Eighth Avenue line's 23rd Street in Manhattan.
