I wonder if any of these institutions maintain these stations in any form. Clean, paint, provide security.
I doubt it!

Dont Like...if you want naming rights you pay for it. I doubt Hostos is doing anything or making any contributions to the station. Someone (probably a lobbyist ) got paid off.

The point of a station name is to aid pax in getting where they need to go. While I am not familiar w/ Hostos, if I wanted to go there, this would make it easier.
Go down the road to where there used to be a tree , turn left...

their logic has to be:

"if two or three separate ajacent subway stations have different station names this may be confusing for passengers headed for that area if they had taken an unfamiliar train line that happens to go to to that area"

the changeover of pacific street station and the two atantic avenue stations to one generic name is particularly irksome.

My alma mater, Pace University, wanted to get the entire Fulton Street station mega complex (2-3-4-5-A-C-J-Z) co-named after them, but to this day, that never happened and probably never will. Their begging to the MTA did not help at all, and the stations are located two blocks south from Pace, which ironically is directly next to the Brooklyn Bridge-Chambers Street station [4-5-6-J-Z] anyway, with one of its entrances on the east side of Park Row near the bridge ramp.

Does the New York Times maintain the Times Square station? How about the NY Aquarium maintaining West 8th st? That's not really the point of a station name..

149th is the 4th or 5th closest stop to my home, and I'm probably going to get used to the name change pretty quickly. The current set up is not very user friendly.
- On the 2 and 5, there are multiple 149th st stops in a row (3av and GC)
- On the 4 and 5 there are multiple GC stops in a row
- Therefore, if you need to communicate instructions to someone you usually must say the full station name to disambiguate.
- Layered on to the previous point is the reality that all 3 of the above-mentioned stations frequently are a part of service changes, and 149-GC is a major transfer point. Having a one-word name to refer to the station will come in handy.
- Hostos itself is a reasonably large draw to the area around the station. Naming the station after a school that's right on top of the station seems well within station-naming conventions.
- There's also the matter of having a "Concourse Line" which runs on "Grand Concourse" which is somehow not involved in the two stops with GC in the name.

It's reasonable for things to change over time. 138-GC used to be named Mott Haven right? It's still in the tiling! I have old NY Central maps of MO that show Grand Concourse as Mott Street. Given enough time, I think it's reasonable for things to have their era and then pass along to time. Hostos has been in the area for 50+ years, perhaps this is its time to take the torch.

As a partisan of Sixth Avenue rather than the Ave ofthe Americas, I have some sympathy for retaining traditional names. That said, IMHO the naming of rail stations is supposed to aid pax in getting to their destinations. For the first 6 decades of my life, the downtown terminal of the Metra Electric (former Illinois Central was Randolph Street. Then they built a park on a deck over the tracks so I have had to learn to call the station Millennium Park.

'Does the New York Times maintain the Times Square station?'

That area was originally called Longacre Square. It was renamed Times Square after the NYT because they moved into the building above the new station (the same year the subway opened - 1904)

This is a public community college, owned and operated by the state for the public benefit.

By your logic, we shouldn’t have stations named after parks or public buildings (like City Hall or Borough Hall) either.

I still can't see it. Three 149th streets, on 3 different cross streets. How confusing can that be?

Again when you continue to cry poverty and want to raise fares and start congestion pricing... Lets be frugal no matter what the cost. The last regime was nickle and diming the Transit Museum (which serves a greater public good - education, work with the special need kids etc..) Evidently somebody Lobbied for this. ( that's how it works in NY State Pay to Play)

Anyway HOSTOS is just a shitty Community College that is there for those who need remedial work b/c the Union of Failed Teacher have can't educate the kids in public schools.

I didn't see why Jay Street (A/C/F) and Lawrence Street (R/W) had to be renamed either when they were connected inside of fare control. However Bleecker Street (6) and Broadway-Lafayette (B/D/F/M) still retained their original names even after the latest reconstruction project was completed. I guess some people at the MTA have to justify their existence.

Lawrence Street is an unknown side street. The renaming made sense.

I seem tn recall seeing somewhere that Bleecker St was landmarked so that even the name can’t be changed since it would compromise the original name in the station tablets.

Re: 149th St-Grand Concourse renamed to 149th St-Hostos

That would refer to the IRT station, thus it will always be "Bleecker Street". Oddly, the full time booth (#R217A) is on the uptown side of the station on the south end at Houston Street.

Ironically, the letters in the name of "Broadway" on the pre-fab panels on the IND station of Broadway-Lafayette are this same number as that of "Bleecker" (eight of them each).

MTA NYCT could get creative, but knowing they will not, is drilling out the "Broadway" squares, and putting in "Bleecker" instead.

Could be confusion as Bleecker Street is parallel to Houston Street, and runs the length between Bowery and 6th Avenue, them bends in a northwest direction continuing way up to 8th Avenue, passing 7th Avenue South as one of the side streets.

["Houston-Lafayette St."]

Whatever the quality of Hostos may be, the renaming makes sense if it's a major destination for riders using that station.

Amusingly of course, west of 6th Ave it is perpendicular to Houston Street, since it veers north while Houston veers south.

I guess he feels subway stops can only be named after schools with the very highest quality of students.
