A free transfer point opened today between the southbound platform (only) of the Bleecker Street Station on the IRT Lexington Avenue Line and the Broadway-Lafayette Street Station on the IND 6th Avenue Line. When the platforms were extended at the Bleecker Street Station to accommodate longer trains the northbound platform was extended north and the southbound platform was extended south and this resulted in the unusual free transfer arrangement.

A free transfer to and from the northbound IRT platform finally opened on September 25, 2012.

This was taken on July 13th, 2012, before the northbound transfer opened. I would transfer there every day in both directions and check out the construction. The staircases down from the street and the transfer tunnel were built with the rest of the Bway/Laf station and had IND tiling, but were closed up for whatever reason and not used. The IRT platform was extended down Lafayette St right up to the building basement walls and then connected to the existing IND mezzanine. The mezzanine even still had the IND 5 bulb fixtures and I wish I had taken a few pics of that. All was reconstructed to what we see today.
