I can't figure out the brake handle activity and how it stops the train. The operator pulls the handle to the 90-degree position (is there no "emergency" position?) and then pushes it back and pulls it forward again, and it's impossible to tell which action applies the brakes.

Is there a simple explanation? The brake handle and mounting look just like SMEE equipment but seem to work completely differently.

O.K. I`ll give it a shot. All the way to the left is release, The next position is Electric hold, The next is Lap, The next is position decreases the air pressure (ie. 10, 15, 20 pounds in reduction) and all the way to the right is Emergency.

The SMEES were self lapping the older equipment is not. Just like the older locomotives. Apply air to slow the train, go to lap and when enough speed is lapped off go to hold. When train is stopped go to release and quickly back to Electric hold to hold some brake on the trainset. I`m sure the pros will chime in to correct any errors that I`ve made.

I`m sure if you go back to Selkirk`s post he gave a better explanation then mine. Folks that have operated locomotives or BVE R1/9 understand what I am trying to convey. Hope this helps.

You forgot the ”handle off” position between electric holding and lap.

Nice video.

In all my years as a railfan and observed motormen-train operators, this is the first time I have ever seen operating the brake handle using an underhand grip.

Yeah.
Now That is a familiar sight.
That was how my Saturdays were, mostly as a kid..and summer days.
Pops had me standing right by his cab door.
I knew the routine..
Didn't have to worry so much about some one bothering you so much, unless it's someone who wants the "railfans window..and even That wasn't a problem since I stayed next to my dad..

Fun times.

A few M/M I have spoken to mostly on the IRT claim that on an ME-23 brake valve, it’s easier operating underhanded, probably because on the Lo-Vs, the brake valve is mounted a bit lower than it is on the R-1/9s. When I was a M/M I worked all kinds of equipment and found that overhand worked fine on both SMEEs and Me-23s

I was wondering if he did the underhand for the video, thinking it maybe gives viewers a better view?

thanks for posting.

Great stuff. When the train started crossing the Williamsburg Bridge, I watched with anticipation to see how the motorman handles the brake and timers.

He used minimal braking and seems to giving smooth ride.

I'm guessing the underhand action is to give us a slightly better view of the braking action.

Not really, As I mentioned in my other post, it’s often a matter of the T/O’s personal preference.
