I can't figure out the brake handle activity and how it stops the train. The operator pulls the handle to the 90-degree position (is there no "emergency" position?) and then pushes it back and pulls it forward again, and it's impossible to tell which action applies the brakes.

Is there a simple explanation? The brake handle and mounting look just like SMEE equipment but seem to work completely differently.
