My first 8th Ave. subway ride took place on this date in 1967. It was a rainy Sunday and we were on our way to the Museum of Natural History. From 42nd St. we took a three-car AA train to 81st. That marked the first time I really noticed the spur-cut bull and pinion gear musical sound as the train accelerated. It was quite literally music to my ears. As it turned out, the museum hadn't opened yet when we got there, so my father asked for directions to Rockefeller Center. A gentleman told him, "Take an AA to 59th and a D train to 47-50th." After lunch at that same Howard Johnson restaurant as the week before, we headed back to the museum, where we got an earful as a n/b R-10 Abbott ripped past in a blur of teal and white. You could see the southern end of the n/b platform fro inside the museum, as well as trains going by. On our way back to PABT, we raced a s/b B part of the way. I still remember the backlit Coney Island side signs on those old timers.

Wasn't one of the ends of #6494 later grafted onto one of the R-27's (#8217, I.I.N.M.), and if so when did that take effect?

Yeah, I remember how noisy the R-10s were when I was waiting on the platform for the local, as well as the doors leading directly from the museum to the n/b platform. Those doors are still there, but they're no longer open to the public.

Was R-11 8010 ever able to work with the other R-11's, maybe when they were converted by the R-34 contract?

From inside that basement, n/b expresses would streak past since they were at full speed before 81st.

You would need a couple of pages to list all of those very convenient doors all over the system which are either locked or bricked over.

Or obliterated, like the S. Kleins entrance at Union Square, complete with its own neon sign.

And A&S in Brooklyn. The entire culture (style?) of convenient connections to destinations, underground walkways (no rainno snow, no traffric lights) has been ruined by the creation of the homeless and the use of these areas as public bathrooms.
