The MTA, which operates the U.S.’s largest transit system, said the B and Z trains, which connect Manhattan with the outer boroughs, will resume on Wednesday. Other lines, including the 6 Express, 7 Express, J Express and A trains that go to Rockaway Beach, will also be reinstated. The W train will not resume, but might restart service next week, according to the official. “Folks are recovering from Covid and coming back to work,” Janno Lieber, the MTA’s acting chief executive officer, said at a press conference Tuesday in the Bronx. “The subways can run on a regular basis. We plan for some unavailability, some absenteeism -- it’s expected. But with omicron we had a very sudden and significant impact.” The subway serves as a lifeline for the city, and the suspended and delayed trains make it harder for those who rely on the transit system to get to their jobs. The MTA had suspended the B, W and Z lines after a surge in Covid cases among employees. However, the Covid-19 positivity rate for train crews -- once at 14% -- is now under 7%, and the MTA says it is confident that it can run service with crews coming back. It’s also “aggressively hiring” after an earlier freeze. The city’s Covid cases and hospitalizations are declining but remain elevated with a ways to go before returning to the lows seen in November. The city reported 16,330 cases on Jan. 15, a drop from a high in early January at more than 40,000 cases a day. Around 74% of bus and subway workers have received at least one vaccine dose, compared with 94% of adults in New York City. The MTA, a state-run agency, does not have to follow the city’s vaccination mandate for employees. "

That falls in line with the NYT article saying some of the outer neighborhoods have jobs less likely to permit tele-commuting.

Pelham can handle just so many trains during the PM rush.
