Thank you, as always.

These Almanac entries about service debuts and other improvements to the Els make me sad- all that work was done, and more than half of most of it scrapped in less than 25 years, and the vast majority destroyed within 40 years. As far as I can think of it, the only El that was improved during the Dual Contract Era that still stands is the Broadway-Brooklyn line.

I'll admit that the 6th/9th/Fulton Els were actually replaced by a better service that combined all three into one system, really. I think the most tragic loss was actually the Second Avenue El, with its service to Astoria, Corona, the Bronx, and the Lower East Side. They'd have been better to retain that one, right up to today.

Sadly, our country throws infrastructure away on a whim. We let housing rot, we destroy useful transport, we ignore maintaining water and sewer systems.

I agree with you. Most of the dual contract improvements to the el only lasted about twenty years or so.

Thank you. I took the time to do a little re-tooling of the el. The martime subjects will now be separate. Also from time to time I will include excerpts from the Book of Forgotten Stations and the Dispatch.

I do not believe in hoarding information. There are always new and younger folks who find it interesting.

That's one reason I biked around the city taking pictures over the last 6 months or so of all the old connections. 9th Ave/Jerome, 3rd Ave/WPR, Bergen cut off, Snediker/Van Sinderen, 2nd Ave/QBP, Fulton/Liberty, Culver/Church Ave.

The other reason I did it is because I just needed some destinations to bike!

Thank you for mentioning the only true Bway Thru exp services that ever operated. The pseudo exp service operating between 225 St and 137 St which was merely a skip stop was NOT a Bway Thru Exp.

When I was going to college 1966-1970 and used the #1 train, during the rush hours about half the trains terminated at 137th St. I assume this was a remnant of the older express service. Similarly(?) on the L line, half the trains terminated at Myrtle Ave.

i think 1 trains made short turns at 137th into the 1980s- maybe right up until the skip-stop 1/9 service debuted in 1989.

Bob: It was common practice for many years to short turn some locals at 137th Street. I believe even today a number are turned there.
