Thank you, as always.These Almanac entries about service debuts and other improvements to the Els make me sad- all that work was done, and more than half of most of it scrapped in less than 25 years, and the vast majority destroyed within 40 years. As far as I can think of it, the only El that was improved during the Dual Contract Era that still stands is the Broadway-Brooklyn line. I'll admit that the 6th/9th/Fulton Els were actually replaced by a better service that combined all three into one system, really. I think the most tragic loss was actually the Second Avenue El, with its service to Astoria, Corona, the Bronx, and the Lower East Side. They'd have been better to retain that one, right up to today. |
