The R-1/9's were being road tested along various IND-BMT Division lines, and being used by new trainees to replace the retired crew members, such as motorman Steve Davis. They would be familiar with operating the cars in service for such events as the NY Transit Museum's Parade of Trains or the Holiday Shoppers' Special.

They had been instructed that basically the R-1/9's are NOT SMEE"s! While the road tests had some degree of success, there was that one incident when the cars gave off a huge arc spewing at Essex-Delancey as they must have hit something on the third rail or track.

Here are three more images of the R-1/9's taken on the same day, but this time laid up at Fresh Pond Yard.

All of the R-1/9's need to entirely repainted, including the ones at the Transit Museum too. R-7A #1575 has now faded exterior paint, with some peeling on the roof.

The “not SMEE” caveat reminds me of when I was a M/M on the M and breaking in a recent transfer from the IRT. I think by that time all the Steinways were off the 3 Av el so this fellow had only worked on SMEES till he transferred to the B and learned the R-9s. He was still so unfamiliar with the operating techniques of the R-9s that I had to hold my hands over his, several times to make sure he actually placed the brake valve in the application position to slow down or make a stop.

Back on Subtalk Day at Shoreline in 2002, they put, "It's not a SMEE!" sign on 1689. Not to mention, "No Foaming" signs.

My advantage as a low seniority vacation relief M/M in 1969 was that most of the newer V/R M/M preferred SMEEs, so since I preferred R-9s, steels and Qs anyhow I was able to pick quite a few AM jobs with S/S off while some of the men just a few pegs above me preferred SMEEs even if the hours and days off weren’t as good.
