Re: [OLDE PHOTO] D-Types At Queensboro Plaza

That's why, whenever I rode on the standards on the Lonesome Larry, the motorman would goose them on the downhill portion of the 14th St. tunnel in order to build up a full head of steam for the uphill climb. Their gear pitch would slowly drop as they labored up the incline, as low as B below middle C before either cutting power at Bedford Ave. or the tracks leveled out before First Ave.

They were underpowered, to say the least. Two 140-hp motors on a car that weighed up to 49 tons. If ever a subway car could have benefitted from beefier motors, it was the BMT standards.

In olden days the road motorman never relayed his own train.

They had an influx of switchmen at the terminals.

thanks Bill.

It looks like the train just arrived and the motorman is getting off or the switchman is getting on and about to throw the reverser key which is why the sealed beams are still not illuminated.

Headlights.

In NYCT they say sealed beams.

That equipment didn't have "sealed beam" headlights.
IIRC they were called running lights.

I wonder how the triplexes would have roared on the Central Park West run before it was castrated?

Correct! the 98,000lb (49 ton) motor cars were even slower when coupled with one or more 4000 series trailer cars. The Standard trailers were still heavy at 94,000lb (47 ton).

That's why trailers were banned from the Manhattan Bridge. IINM they spent most of their careers on the Three Stooges Division.

None of the R-1s ever had headlights, although I believe 381 has them now and 103 might. 100 does not have them.

R-1 #380 had the seal beam headlights while in regular service, as seen here on the "D" at 59th-8th. Museum cars #103 and #381 have them currently, but still not #100.

Any BMT equipment would do better on the IND due to the voltage difference. In the old days the BMT only cranked out 550 volts while the IND supplied the full 600.

The problem wasn’t the HP of the motors. It was that the BMT steels had maximum traction trucks inly one motor per truck instead of a 2 motor truck and a trailer truck as other equipments had. Like the replacement trucks from the Composites as used on the Qs, maximum traction trucks don’t do well with trailers in the consist since there is not enough weight on any truck to give good traction.

On the BMT, the road M/M relayed their own trains earlier than most of us realize. The various operating procedures of the divisions underwent several changes over the years. At one time the IND had something written into their work programs called WAD for work as directed similar to the present WAA work as assigned which was used for variousC/R and M/M’s duties like putting in, laying up and relaying trains. The IND for several years went to the use of switchmen for non road duties while the BMT stuck with it in the form of what used to be called T/C for transfer cars. Crew objecting to being ordered to make road trips during T/C time caused to TA to rename the non road time in the work programs to the current WAA.

I've heard that on the Brighton line, the voltage might drop as low as 475 volts. Everybody out and push!
