R-32 Longevity Record

Posted by IRTRedbirdR33 on Thu Jan 13 06:48:20 2022

Correct me if I am wrong but the R-32s seem to have the house record for longevity on the subway system. They entered service in 1964 and made their last run in 2022. So that's fifty eight years.

The previous record was held by the Gibbs High Voltage Motors which were in service from 1904 to 1958.

Notice I said subway system not the el system. The BU/Q-Type trailers on the Myrtle Avenue El ran from 1904 to 1969.

I think you're correct.

One cool coincidence: the Gibbs and R32s shared a number series!

I think part of the reason the R32 did so well is that it spent so much time underground instead of exposed to the outdoors over the last 25 years.

Many cars were on the E line for the longest time. It's underground. Many layup positions underground.

Other cars on the C also underground with a sheltered yard at Pitkin.

It's assignments to these lines for so long must have helped preserve them.

How about the complete rebuild they went through?
Then the starting of SMS and maintenance done before things broke instead of waiting for something to break before taking a train in for service.

Well that primarily. But avoiding the rain, snow and sun and extreme temperatures had to contribute.

All the tunnel time vs outdoors matters.

Your absolutely right. The Gibbs car were numbered 3350-3649.

The R-32 A's had the same numbers.

The original R-32 were 3650-3949.

57 years and 3 months, actually; #3360 first ran on the subway system Oct. 9, 1964. They didn't even make it to 58 in actuality.

For seniority purposes it’s 58. It doesn’t matter if it was January or October of ‘64. It’s 58 years in service.

Why lie about it?
The cars were pulled from service 2021,never to return.
They last ran fully in J service...
They were pulled because of the pandemic.
The Only reason they hung around was because of the door problems the R179 had.
The 32s were fantastic cars.
I liked them a lot,but was pretty disappointed because they were southern subway cars...rarely seen along the Eastern Division lines.
Facts.
Arrived via New York Central, to Grand Central Sept of 1964.
Enter service on the Broadway Brighton Express later that year ,around October of 1964.
That was 57 years ago.

Period.

They were also completely made of stainless steel, so they stood up to rust and rot more than the R38/40/42/44. All of these car classes were retired specifically for rust issues.
