Seems a shame to retire these tough old soldiers but I guess time marches on.

If there was a Subway Car Hall of Fame, the R-32s would be enshrined, joining the BMT Standards, the Arnines and the Redbirds as the finest rolling stock this city has ever seen.

Great stuff! I wasn't able to stick around for the very last part (the last trip + running the OOS shuttles between Brighton Beach and Kings Highway), but it was a good day. Good thing it was only drizzling for the most part during the day.

Thanks William. Kinda sad for me, like I lost a friend. I first saw them by accident when riding the Sea Beach line when I was 13 years old. At Fort Hamilton Pkwy station, I saw something on the adjacent track that was bright silver.

I got off and my eyes saw this new subway car that was shiny and bright with blue doors. I must have been at that station for over an hour watching the performance testing while AB's were making station stops. Great memories.

Hi,
If the sign was a paste on, why 57th Street and not 96th Street. Would the 57th St. sign confuse the regular passengers, or were they told to just wait for the next train as I assume the train was running on the 6th Ave. line anyway and would never reach Bway and 57th Street.

The train was running in regular service all the way between 96th-2nd and Brighton Beach via the Broadway (Manhattan) BMT, and there were announcements over the PA system that the train was going to make regular stops, including on the SAS.

The G.O. that had for running regular "Q" trains going in one direction (N/B) to 96th Street via the Monty Hall Tubes, while the "N" and "R" would have taken the Manny B, was cancelled for that weekend anyway.

The NYTM did not do the add-ins stickies for "96th St,-2nd Av." on the R-32's in all the cars, as they did for the R-1/9's going up there on the Holiday runs in 2017. One of the better unanswered questions.

I don’t know about the Triplexes. They didn’t have a very long career (less than 40 years in some cases) and from what I’ve read, they were very heavy. True, they were innovative but that’s not enough to enshrine them, in my opinion.

The Gibbs cars are a sentimental choice. People love them because they were first.

Fantastic images, Bill!
Unbelievable, they actually put in the original roll signs or a spitting image of them, for the Q Broadway Express. And the blue doors! And the near perfect Q destination pastee up front. Hurray for all those behind the scenes who made it happen!
The crowds remind of what I encountered on the Q Brighton Express in 1965-67 when I went to Tech HS. So close to the real thing way back when. I wish I could have participated.
Thanks for the great images!

Few if any made 40 years. I think most people, crew and passengers alike, did not regard the R9 as an improvment over the Standards that were 20 years olde on the Eastern Division, even with fresh interior paint. They seemed old from day one and were noisy.

I remember the first time I saw a Brightliner. It was on the Manhattan Bridge. All that shiny metal set off by the rich blue doors was really stunning, especially compared with the appearance of the rest of the fleet in the mid 60s (R-11s notwithstanding).

Rebuilds helpfully added air conditioning but sacrificed the distinctive NYCTA metal spring-loaded hold straps. Also, the blue doors were sacrificed, and the bonnets were destroyed--the R-38 rebuilds were done far more attractively--but the R-32s remained a great fleet. Too bad they didn't let them get to year 60! So close!

No more railfan window anywhere. We've also lost rear windows in buses, but that's another disappointment.

Those numerals that spelled out car numbers on the front are one of those "lost fonts" you don't see anymore. Those, and the numerals on the fronts of 'Fishbowl' buses and Flxible New Looks, and all the type widths on the Transign mylar roll signs. They were as much a part of New York as those they were affixed to.
