The M9 is a piece of crap

Posted by sloth on Sun Dec 5 01:36:54 2021

The side to side shake on curves, turnouts, and anything less than perfect track is terrible. It's embarrassing that a 20-year old M7 rides far better, has more comfortable seats and leg room, and is more operator friendly. They should mothball these turkeys and bring back the M3s.

I'm glad I didn't buy one.

I still see them transported by truck on I-84 from time to time, too.

M3s you can forget about, even though they haven't reached the 40-year-old mark yet.

I rode an M-9 for the first time in September from Long Beach to NY.
We zoomed from Jamaica to NYPS in 17 minutes with a stop in Woodside, and went through Harold al its switches into Line 1 at 60MPH. It was fine. I did move from one car to another due to shitty air conditioning.

The last time I rode an M-3 was about 3 years ago to Mineola. We went through Floral Park at 80 MPH and it bounced like a trampoline through the station. My ass bounced out of my seat.

Saying the M-7 rides better is something, cause the M-7 rides like shit (though they’re better than when new, where they slammed around so bad, even on straight track, that they felt like they were going to derail)

Maybe it’s time the MYA stops playing the preferred builder shit, microengeneering the designs, and start looking at best practice elsewhere…

Memories. Maybe seven years ago, my wife phoned from a westbound train, where she and her friends were having an unusual rough ride on an M-7. I had seen them off, as they were going to the theatre. She gave me the car number. I phoned a complaint and warning to the LIRR. Somehow, I got a supervisor, who said (surprisingly) that I sounded like a knowledgeable railfan and took the train and car numbers before they reached Penn. I never heard back, that's okay. Later, I realized that any seat above a truck could be scary for the bounces and noise. When I ride alone, I usually choose a seat midway between trucks.

Pioneer trucks are not noted for comfort either. Amfleet-1 vibrates once over 80 MPH. Afmleet-2 are a little better, but not by much.

The M3 bounced up and down mostly, sometimes bad enough to bottom out. It could be bad in spots like Shea Interlocking or the crossings in New Hyde Park. Once I dumped an entire fresh XL cup of coffee into the console on the 12th Street crossing at 80. Ruined my entire day but the M3 took it in stride.
The side to side motion on the 9s is especially noticeable on the Atlantic Branch west of Jamaica, and the curves east of Manhasset.

It's kind of apples and oranges. The main problem operator wise with the 3 is the tiny cab with nowhere to put food drink or bag. Once I got used to them I had a lot of fun. It's more hands on, and you can really beat on them without making the lousy ride quality any worse.
The 9 is like playing a cheap video game where the controller doesn't do what it's supposed to. MIN Brake and MIN Power are both gutless, whereas you could do station stops in a 7 using nothing but MIN Brake and a little adjustment at the end. The 9 also automatically takes off brake cylinder at the end of a stop, which is one of those features that must have sounded wonderful on a drawing board but sucks completely out in the field.

Atlantic Branch west of Jamaica is pretty tangent, except for East New York. I dont get what is wrong. I guess all the the curves out to Huntington are not done that fast. The curves just west of Syosset are coded much slower since the Spuyten Duyvil wreck.

The P-72 coaches would always bottom out at Willis Avenue crossing and switches. Commonwealth trucks were always noted for a smooth ride, but these had fewer springs than most, and there were the Pennsy-inspired leaf springs.

At least the M-9's south windows aren't opaque like the M-7's, which LIRR is to cheap to re-glaze.

I don't mind the min-brake I like having better range. I can't stand how the anti-rollback is so aggressive, to the point you have to change your operating tempo...and if you get it wrong you can feel the train slamming into a brick wall.

Also the soft stop feature was a nice one that no one told us about, I love when I feel my train floating as I come up to the wall at Hempstead.

The top-end acceleration is terrible, you hit every checkpoint just a few mph underspeed.

For whatever reason, the Pioneers were actually decent on the Silverliner II cars.

The Amfleet has a resonance at about 57 mph. A stupid place for a train that goes 120 on the corridor. I have a document somewhere stating Amtrak hates the truck because it’s hard on track

I don’t think anyone published the weight of the m-9, and after the m-7 hot rightly zeroed out as an example of excessive design, I doubt they will. But, I wouldn’t be surprised if it’s a good amount more than the 7.

Well if they haven't shared then I won't *but* M7 and M9s are at roughly equal weight. In fact with individual car variances it might even be possible for an M7 to outweigh an M9 (for the A cars). The B cars carry more equipment so I'm sure all the M9s are heavier, but we're talking weights of less than a ton.

Mr. Meoli was legendary. I used to ride at the RFW of an M-1 train he was operating, and he sold me belt buckles and other LIRR trinkets right from his open cab. I clearly remember a 1984 ERA fan trip I took, "Farewell to the C420". Bob had the train which connected with the excursion at Jamaica, a local out of Penn. I don't know if that train was his regular job, but he made a nice bundle of cash during that short early morning trip! There were railfans piled deep around the cab that day.

I know that a number of railroad people and regular commuters who had monthly passes would ride the electrics up to Harmon. They were a lot less crowded. At Harmon a fair number of the holidays travelers got off the POK train so there was so room on the trains.

At one time M-N was kickin around the Idea of expanding service to Rhine cliff. They even went so far as to print up a prototype "duplex" conductor issue tickets & rearranging the fare zones. That Idea went nowhere. The logistics of parking, extra traffic in and out of the station, yard space, diesel idling and lest I forget, NIMBY opposition & working out trackage rights with CSX all but doomed the fantasy.

I believe the idea was to go all the way up to Tivoli, the northmost location along the Hudson in Dutchess County. Google arial view shows that the right of way used to accommodate 3 or 4 tracks just north of there, so building a siding to turn trains probably wouldn't have been too expensive.

But the NIMBYs didn't want it.

Legally titled to CSX, but Amtrak leases it for many decades, and controls it all the way to Hoffman's. For freight service, CSX pays Amtrak a lesser amouint to lease it back. It is something like LIRR/NY&A.
