Vermonter-Springfield reverse move

Posted by Spider-Pig on Mon Nov 22 13:18:55 2021

Does the Vermonter use a cab car, two locos, or a engine change to reverse directions at Springfield? Same question for Valley Flyer.

Valley Flyer - cab car, like a springfield shuttle.
Vermonter, no cab car, that stopped when they stopped going via Palmer.
It simply backs out or in and heads north or south.
One loco each.

So the Vermonter passes the junction and backs into the station, or enters forward, then backs out, reversing again?

I forgot which. I have only ridden it southbound.

It uses Amtrak territory for it's moves. It hacks out northbound and backs in southbound.

To help picture it better, only the southern leg of the wye is used, and the engine never changes directions.

Southbound trains: Stop past wye, reverse north into station, continue south to D.C.

Northbound trains: After station stop, reverse south from station just past the wye, then continue straight to St. Albans

I rode a Springfield shuttle one night at the headend..it was a weird run...
Train was operating as a "pusher"..engine in the rear..no cab in the front!

Ah, thank you. So in effect, given that the northern part of the wye isn't used, all that's happening is that the station is on a spur track that is accessed from the south.

C/R was at the head end relaying instructions over the radio to the engineer in the locomotive? I believe they do something like this at Dover NJT and Metro North Southeast, but those are short distances though.

It’s like a typical bus station.

Though two newer bus stations I have seen (orders of magnitude smaller than PABT), namely at White Plains Station and at New Rochelle Station, have drive-through so the bus never has to back up.

That is correct. The Valley Flyer theoretically could use the north leg of the wye by serving the station on Track 1 since it has a cab car, but CSX strongly prefers for CTrail and Amtrak to keep everything on tracks 4-8 so that doesn’t happen too often.

A conductor can put the train in an emergency if required when they do that. I've seen that a Bridgeport when the backed into the station when a bridge was stuck open with the Conductor riding in the open door of the last car and some type of hose connection he held to the brake pipe on the coupler.

The train shoved the whole way in revenue service? IIRC when trains shove like that, the conductor calls out how many feet/cars that the train is good for over the radio, but the engineer has to be prepared to stop within half of said distance (i.e. if the conductor calls out 20 cars the engineer has to be ready to stop within 10 cars), so that must have been a really slow ride.

It backs out like leaving a driveway then continues as usual.

The Vermonter normally does but he was referring to the Springfield Shuttle, which normally has a cab car and just pulls in/out of the station. The only time that the Shuttle and CTrail normally shove is when pulling in/out of the yard at New Haven.
