Hate that name "Eurotunnel". Glad it's gone, even though "Getlink" is not much better.

If NYC had let the private subway companies run freight at night as originally intended, that would have brought a huge pile of revenue to them.

Private railroads do not want freight profits cross subsizing passenger trains. That's why we have commuter rail authorities and Amtrak for 50 - 60 years.

"If NYC had let the private subway companies run freight at night as originally intended, that would have brought a huge pile of revenue to them."

That is an idea that probably ought to be resurrected, combined with full ADA elevator access at all subway stations, or at least as many as can practically be accomplished. Imagine major companies repurposing currently empty office space near subway stations as delivery transfer points for freight of various types. Freight would be put into the subway system at outlying points in the city. Deliveries would be made to the transfer points at night via subway, taking delivery trucks off the streets of the city and reducing pollution. The following day, the final step of the deliveries would be made from the transfer points, or perhaps smaller parcels and packages could be claimed from the transfer points by the recipients. The ADA elevators in the subway could be large enough to handle large freight loads at night and large numbers of passengers during the day. Wouldn't this sort of thinking benefit everyone?

Delivering freight in the middle of the night via truck does not cause traffic congestion.

It's not done much right now because businesses generally don't want to receive freight in the middle of the night.

The transfer points I described would operate 24 hours a day and the last leg of the delivery could be accomplished the next business day after the delivery to the local transfer point.

But you can deliver to the transfer points by truck as well, and you won't have to deal with late night train traffic. Also remember that it takes time to drop off cargo at these transfer points, which can easily hold up passenger trains.

I think senility is getting to you, otherwise you would've remembered why the IRT has such small and narrow cars. Even the BMT could have done a relaively comprehensive local freight network, but didn't.

actually not. The Chicago Tunnel System was an entirely separate freight only network in the Loop and some nearby bits of downtown. Well documented history is available. In fact ssome parts of that tunnel system (which was built around the turn of the 19th to 20th century) were destroyed to make ROW for what are now CTA's subways.
Most Chicagoans had no knowledge of the tunnels, but were rudely educated in 1992 whena segment under the river was breached flooding the whole network

I read about the flood years ago. You could actually see a whirlpool like a sink drain where the tunnel was breached!

It was also interesting when they discovered one of the locomotives and cars stored in a siding. Toward the end, they were just taking coal ash and storing them in sidings instead of disposing of it.

That was something that the Port Authority was commissioned to build and ended up never doing.
