The Chicago Tunnel System was an entirely separate freight only network in the Loop and some nearby bits of downtown. Well documented history is available. In fact ssome parts of that tunnel system (which was built around the turn of the 19th to 20th century) were destroyed to make ROW for what are now CTA's subways. Most Chicagoans had no knowledge of the tunnels, but were rudely educated in 1992 whena segment under the river was breached flooding the whole network https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chicago_flood |
