The IRT Mosholu inspection yard is to the left and behind the NYC DEP activity as seen the photo.

This would place the photo location between West Mosholu Parkway and Van Courtland Av East from the West side of Jerome Avenue at Van Courtland Ave East.

Bill: Excellent photos. Is is any wonder that we called them "Redbirds".

I would guess Soundview Avenue looking north to St. Lawrence Avenue.

Larry you are correct. That Timer Signal on Track M was real drag on southbound express trains back in the day.

Hello Bill M

The view is looking northeast in the mid 1950's from just immediately above Van Cortland Park East (street) which comes in and ends off the right edge of photo. The Low-V train is SB over Jerome Avenue on the IRT Woodlawn - Jerome line from the Mosholu Parkway Local Station.

At left is the HIGH PUMPING Station - often assumed / mistaken by many to be an old IRT Carbarn. Its actually a pumping station built 1905-06 for the old Croton Aqueduct and was there before the EL was built in 1915-1917.

Constructed as part of the nearby Jerome Reservoir complex, an adjunct to the Croton Aqueduct system, the station was built to pump water from the reservoir located to its west to consumers throughout the borough.

Here is a link to a bit of history and some excellent photos of the Water pumping Station

NOTE: When the photo and short description page comes up, use the RIGHT side arrow to move to the right and see all following pumping station photos.

Now that you mention it I remembered that timer. Trains would slow almost to a crawl.

Bill: Excellent photos.

Thanks Larry. I've been digitizing my image collection so I can find a photo much faster than dragging out the slide file and finding them. So every now and then I need some help assigning a station, location or line.

VanCortlandt AVENUE East, actually.

I'm not nitpicking - VanCortlandt Park East is a completely different street bordering Woodlawn to the west.

Asgard

THANK YOU much - appreciated ! -- You are correct -- is is "EAST" -- heh. Thanks for noticing and fixing that ! That is not nitpicking at all !

I mis-typed the street name -- likely because I had the "Van Cortlandt PARK" itself on my mind -- as I had been writing about something related to that PARK a bit earlier on another topic elsewhere !
