Re: [PHOTO] Street Identification Needed

Hello Bill M

The view is looking northeast in the mid 1950's from just immediately above Van Cortland Park East (street) which comes in and ends off the right edge of photo. The Low-V train is SB over Jerome Avenue on the IRT Woodlawn - Jerome line from the Mosholu Parkway Local Station.

At left is the HIGH PUMPING Station - often assumed / mistaken by many to be an old IRT Carbarn. Its actually a pumping station built 1905-06 for the old Croton Aqueduct and was there before the EL was built in 1915-1917.

Constructed as part of the nearby Jerome Reservoir complex, an adjunct to the Croton Aqueduct system, the station was built to pump water from the reservoir located to its west to consumers throughout the borough.

Here is a link to a bit of history and some excellent photos of the Water pumping Station

NOTE: When the photo and short description page comes up, use the RIGHT side arrow to move to the right and see all following pumping station photos.

regards - Joe F
