Relatively soon after Chrystie the R-27/30s got the new signs but not color coded ones. Like the QJ signs, the RJ signs also read "Via Nassau St" as did the RR/Nassau signs that subsequently replaced them after the RJ was eliminated.

This photo at Brighton beach was posted here recently, but I'm not sure if I have the original or a copy.
I did brighten and sharpened it up a bit. Was this the first train of R-32's on the (Q) Brighton ? (Oct. 1, 1964)

image host

On public display at 34th St. & 6th Ave. You'll notice that the ceiling light fixture 56 watt bulbs were
replaced with 150 watt flood lights to provide more light.(Nov. 1964)

image host

#3368 looks like it was on the first day of service with it's spanking clean exterior. Since this is a weekend service, it should be a 6 car train. (undated photo)
image host

Old meets their new replacements. This photo appeared in one of my subway calendars a couple of years ago.
The R-32's and AB's are both West End trains at 39th Ave Beebe on the Astoria line. (July 1965)

image host

This is an odd photo. Brighton line layups are usually between Kings Hwy and Sheepshead Bay. This is at Ave M.
With snow falling is this a snow "plan" judging by the length layups on the express track ? (Jan. 24, 1965)
image host

A pair of R-32's outside Coney Island shops. (Oct. 1965)
image host

The area on the left should be where the original car wash once was and current one now with Stillwell yard on the right.
I remember a small farm on the left before Coney Island yard was expanded. Remember the gas tank ? (Feb. 1966)

image host

This should be Hewes St. on the Broadway Jamaica line. AM rush hour West End's to Chambers St. would run light to ENY (D.O.) yard for layup. Now returning for the PM rush hour, he'll make stops to Chambers St. and make their usual stops to Bay Pkwy. D Type's and maybe AB's make the same run. (Aug 1966)
image host

On weekends, the (TT) West End locals would terminate at 36th St & 4th Ave. Here's one at 36th St. (June 30, 1968)
image host

This is my oldest existing subway photo that I took of a (TT) shuttle at Coney Island when I was fifteen years old.
I used a cheap roll film camera that my allowance could afford. (circa 1966)

image host

Something was happening on Oct 27, 1968. (B) trains ran shuttle between 57th St. and 34th St. & 6th ave.
Perhaps track or switch work. For those who never saw 34th st. bathed in incandescent light, feast your eyes. Notice the vending machines and pretzel stand.

image host

The (NX)'s were usually R-27/30's, but here at Coney Island are a set of R-32's making the run.
The (NX) must have been more popular with railfans than the riding public. (Dec. 5, 1967)

And finishing off the R-32 cavalcade of photos, a (QJ) at DeKalb Ave. minus a (QJ) sign. (Dec 7, 1967).
Coming soon.......the R-38's.

In one sense yes. But the RR carrier would have to pay the damages incurred during transit. Back during the delivery of the R44 & 46s, Penn Central had to pay big bucks for smashed windows & dented sides due to rock throwers and the occasional poor track condition derailments. PC as the delivering carrier with always get stuck with the tab

Probably by then, they had gone to the "trunk" coloring, where brown was the color for Broadway/Brooklyn (and by extension, Nassau St service). I don't recall whether the change to single letters was before or after the trunk coloring, as I was no longer living in NYC by then

They showed a green RR on the Vignelli maps. Near the end, when they went to all single letters, they showed a brown R. What they did in between, I don't remember.

The designation of the "RR Nassau Street-Fourth Avenue Local" has always caused confusion. The RR Nassau Street- Fourth Avenue Local began operation on Monday, July 1, 1968. It was identified with a green line the same as the RR Broadway-Fourth Avenue Local. The only differrence was that the service on Nassau Street was shown with dashes and not a solid line indicating a rush hour service. This wasn't so much of a problem when every subway line had its own color.

The 1979 Edition of the subway map which was issued in June of that year simplified the color identification system by assigning a single color to each mainline. The color for the Broadway Line was yellow so all three Broadway routes; N,QB and RR were yellow either with a circle or a diamond. The diamond being for rush hour service.
The Nassau Street Line became the brown line and so did its two routes the J and M. For whatever reason the TA chose to identify the Nassau Street RR service with a yellow color and shown it as a branch of the Broadway RR.

This continued with the elimination of double letters effective with the subway map issued on May 10, 1985 although the official date of the changeover was actually a year later on May 5, 1986.

We still had two yellow R's.

Finally with the May, 24, 1987 subway map the Nassau Street R was given a brown color while the Broadway R retained its yellow color.
Effective on this date also the Nassau Street R was virtually merged with the M and there was a through routing of train between Metropolitan Avenue and 95th Street. Trains carried M signs on the front rollsigns in one direction and R signs in the other direction.
This lasted only until November 23, 1987 when Fourth Avenue-Nassau Street service was discontinued. The last train had cars (s)4878-,4850-1,4897-6 and 4937-6 (n).

Speaking of tracks in the street, I convinced him to drive down the center of LaSalle Ave. in South Bend once, right over the South Shore rails.

I was in NYC for a few days in 1979/1980/1981, but I forgot that they had already done the colors. After 1981, I didn't return until 1987, by then, everything was pretty much the way it is today.
