For those that don't know. Just before 5:00 PM on 10 12 2021 Blue line train 704 heading in direction of Franconia Springfield derailed south of the Rosslyn Station a couple of hundred short of exiting the tunnel portal. The trains consist was 7k cars. Blue line service was operated between Franconia Springfield and Mount Vernon Square and Orange and Silver line train were single tracked between Foggy Bottom and Court House on 10 12, 13 2021 to conduct an investigation, remove the derailed cars and make track repairs.

So stuff happens on the 12th, and WMATA tells their ridership 'sorry 'bout your train to work, maybe you should walk' on the 17th?

Maybe they should convert the tunnels into bike lanes be done with it.

That leaves just the 2000's, 3000's and 16 of the 6000's in service. Too bad they scrapped the 5000's.

My understanding is all 180 of the 6k cars have been returned to service.

Seems the NTSB has discovered that the wheels on the axles were slipping out of gauge (wide)

‘This could have been catastrophic’: NTSB says Metro wheel problem that caused Blue Line derailment dates back to 2017.

Sounds to me like the interference fit of the wheels to axle was greater then spec.

Here is the deal with the 7k cars.

Multiple cars are have had issues with the wheels on the wheel sets slipping out of gauge (wider then correct gauge). The derailment on 10 12 2021 was caused by one of the flanges on the out of gauge wheel sets picking the point of the frog in junction turnout south of the Rosslyn Station.

NTSB WMATA Metrorail Derailment Media Briefing starting at 22:07

This is sounding like an issue with the assembly of the wheel sets. Seems like the vendor that made the wheel sets for Kawasaki were fitting wheels to the axles that had interference fits that were out of tolerance. Either the inside diameter of the wheel bore was to big or the outside diameter of the axle was to small or combination of both. It could also be that the interference fit tolerances used were not correct in the first place.

The tolerance used in interference fits are measured in ten thousands of an inch or one hundreds of mileometer. The temperature of two parts being interference fitted must be same when the measurements are made.

I don't know the number of miles they run before replacing them after several times of re-truing the wheel profile. New wheels are 28".

They sure as hell don't slip out of gauge before wearing down to the minimum diameter.

From my limited knowledge of mechanical engineering, I would agree.
