IND Crosstown (G) Line Gets R160 New Tech Trains – Good News For (G) Train Riders

Posted by Transportation Hub on Mon Oct 11 16:07:46 2021

In this episode of the HubTalk Chronicles, we will be talking about the Crosstown (G) Line. For all the (G) line customers, you guys are in luck. The SMEEs 4-car consists of R46 and R68/As will be swapped with 5-car consists of R160s. The (G) will be going back home from the Coney Island Yard to the Jamaica Yard, the first time since 2010 when the (G) was severed from Queens Blvd in the 2010 cuts. Good news for riders. Bad news for the N, (Q), and (W) line straphangers as they will see more of these R46s and R68/As until the new R211s arrive later on in the decade. This is done due to CBTC installations on Culver (which is going on now) and on Crosstown (which will start later on) as part of former NYCT-President Andy Byford’s plan to modernize the entire subway system in less than 40 years. Listen and enjoy.

I can’t understand why the R-160s assigned to the G can’t still be maintained at CIYd since it would be closer to its south terminal that Court Sq is to JYd.

They wanted to keep all of the 5 car R160 at Jamaica Yard instead.

The only good news for G riders will be longer trains, not newer trains of the same short length. This may be good news for the train crews, especially the conductors, but the riders will still have to run down the platforms to catch the trains, and walk long distances to exit. The increase in the number of doors will have minimal impact, because the G trains are rarely packed and station dwell time is almost never an issue.

What would also help would be to speed up the timers between Court Sq and 21 St. The trains that have to switch tracks (in either direction) must crawl painfully slowly through the middle track with all the lunar whites. Lucky for the Court Sq dispatchers that they don't have to run too many trains per hour.

Whats wrong with the R46 & R68s? They have a comfy ride & the transverse seating is a big plus. If a survey were taken & be willing to guess that the average rider would prefer the ride & feel of the older cars than the sterile polished R160s with their shinny park benches.

Furthermore with the R46 and R68 they could increase the length of the trains to 6 cars, a nice compromise between the current too-short 4 cars and full-blown 8 cars which may not be available.

Max allowed length for OPTO as per contract 300 feet..

Five car R160 Unit 301.5 feet...

So no deal...

Why should there be a 1.5 ft difference between 4 X 75 footers and 5 X 60 footers? The difference is so minuscule that if the TWU were to try and protest they would be laughed out of court. Not only that but the distance between the C/R position and the "long" end of a train on the Flushing Line exceeds that by a few ft anyhow so based on past practice, the union would lose.

? Why wouldn't there be a 1.5 foot difference in length? It's a precise measurement.

I agree that the court would rule against the union. Both 4Χ75 and 5Χ60 use same car markers and CR boards.

They could increase R-46s to 6 cars but not R-68ssince with the exception of the Fkln Shuttle fleet all 68s are linked as 4 cars units.

Between 6206/07 permanently linked to a pair of 6100's due to the other 2 being retired from the derailment north of 125 a few years ago and from one car of 6214/16 permanently linked to the surviving 3 60xx cars from the 14/8 vandalism derailment about a year ago with the mate in storage/cannibalized, there wouldn't be enough R46 pairs to have the 6 running as 6 car R46's.

That's 2 fewer R46 pairs available today than there was when they ran 6 cars when the G went to Continental.

That's true but on curved stations with the t/o stopping at the 6 car marker with an R160 the c/r would be at a different place on the monitor than he would be on an R46/68/68A. That 30 inches makes a difference.

Eventually the 6 car markers will have to be moved 30 inches forward.

Comfy ride? Have you been on an R46 lately? They run like crap. They may have been the "Cadillac" of subway cars but they are a 45 year old beat up Cadillac held together with duct tape.

And whenever I ride the Q train I always am checking the signs. A good 50% are either wrong or not working. And the R68s don't have 96th/2nd on them. Why put cars on the one line they don't have signs for?

The maintenance is clearly not being done on these old cars.

And no, the average rider would not prefer it. People like sterile, polished, clean cars, not the ones with 40 years of crud.

When the millenials see woodgrain and formica, they probably say "eww, so dated" like an HGTV show of a kitchen lacking granite countertops and stainless appliances, and of course "open concept". So they probably like bowling alley seats in NTT cars too.

Yeah, the R-46's are better on the "A" and "C". Kudos and credit to the shop forces at 207th and Pitkin, who know what they are dealing with in terms of maintaining any such older cars out there.

Agreed. It's funny as the R68/68A assigned to CI seem to be doing just fine.

I will say the R68As are a little on the loud side for whatever reason. They was much quieter in the 2000s. 68A still my favorite of three, they was so pleasant to ride on the Q during my high school years (06 until whenever they put R160s on the Q)

As a regular rider of the GG, I mean G, Crosstown, the introduction of the five car trainsets of R-160's are welcome. The R68's were nice n all, but limiting the trains to four car sets made for some pretty crowded rides.

Much better. For now anyway.

This was on the list of G line improvements for a while, interrupted by the pandemic.

6 out of 13 trains are R160's today as per a report I received.

A 5 car R160 is 30 inches longer than a R car R46/68/68A.

4 X 75 ft cars is the same length as 5 X 60 ft cars so no increase in capacity.

I definitely saw a difference when riding the R160 on the G this week vs the R68's last week.

There's also more doors per side (20 vs 16), so dwell times may be reduced.
