[PHOTOS] Special R-32 Train In The Rockaways

Posted by Bill Newkirk on Mon Oct 11 16:06:09 2021

These two photos are of the same R-32 train, this one seen here at Hammel's Wye. The front signs are covered by a paper sign but in an attempt to zoom in and read it, it was illegible. These photos are copy slides that aren't superior to the originals. There is a Christmas wreath hung on the chains much like on the Holiday Train.
So what is this special run ? Do you know Larry Red Bird ? I speculate this is December of 1965.

Near Broad Channel minus the Christmas wreath.

Bill: I don't have any specific information on this. It does look like some kind of a fantrip.

I do recall that just before the R-32s were delivered, the rumors were that they were supposed to go to the IND Queens lines of course that didn’t happen but I do recall that post Chrystie a couple of occasions where a B train was sent through to 207 St to cover a delay in A service and ended up going S/B in A service most likely to Far Rock.

May 14, 1966 ?

Shouldn't there be foliage on the trees ?

It should be noted that not all images on the nycsubway.org website have accurate locations and dates. With all due respect, the webmaster has to work and deal with whatever is on hand.

The May 14, 1966 date could be what was on the slide mount or print he had in his possession. And so it goes...

Yes I did. May 14 can be a cool day though.
I’ve seen this photo before because it’s in Rockaway. I never noticed the wreath until now.
Almost exactly 10 years before I was born by the way

May 14, 1966 was a Saturday so it is possible that’s the correct date. It seems like many of the photographs were taken on the weekends.

I caught an R-32 A once at 14th St. on a Saturday afternoon in the spring of '69 or thereabouts. Back then it was very rare to see them there. But since the AA was mostly R-32s, it was easy to borrow a set if the need arose.

The R-32s were being delivered so rapidly that they needed to make room for them. So the Triplexes became sacrificial lambs.

Awesome!! Always love the R32s!!

Also like seeing modern-looking traffic signals and street lights from the 1960s as well!! The general look of those hasn't changed in ~60 years! (of course there've been some changes- but the overall look is the same)

I was surprised to see a triple stack of lights. I remember so many double stacks in Far Rockaway. I suppose B. 84 or so it’s far enough.

True, but since there had already been a history of R-1s and R-9s on the BMT in earlier years, the R-32s could have been assigned to the Queens IND and the R-1/9s reassigned to the BMT.

Just a thought but I wonder if the reason was simply because of their weight.

Perhaps NYCTA engineers felt that over the long term the weight of the D Types would have an adverse effect on the structures....including the Sea Beach at Stillwell station.

Also, I grew up in Far Rockaway...most of the Peninsula didn't get three-phase traffic signals until the early '70s. In fact, there were still quite a few two-phase signals in the Rockaways as late as 1990. I don't think Rockaway Fwy. around the Wye had three-phase traffic lights as early as 1966.
