I wonder if they ran 5-car trains on track 1 and 4 to keep the same number of cars available.

Tracks 1 and 4 of the shuttle could only accommodate three car trains due to short platforms at Times Square. Track 3 ran five car trains when track 4 was out of service during the installation of equipment to run the automated train on track 4 in the early 1960s.

Hard to say, as even during this current (2021) reconstruction of the Shuttle had trains on tracks 1 and 4 each running with three cars. So, it is possible it was that same arrangement back then in 1966, because the platforms at TSQ on 1 and 4 could only handle three cars even then.

From May 7, 1966, two vintage views of the R-12/14's on Track 4 at GCT, with Track 3 in the foreground and the former Track 2 filled in with concrete.

A year ago today, Denver's newest commuter line, the N line, opened. Rides were free all weekend and revenue service began on Monday the 21st. The line opened only as far as Eastlake-124th Ave. The remaining 5.5 miles to 162nd Ave. will be completed once fundign becomes available. I just hope it doesn't turn into Denver's version of the IRT Nostrand Ave. line.

So for a period they were only using Track 4 on the shuttle?

Thank you, as always!! I didn't know that the Times Square Shuttle station had a wooden platform for almost 50 years!

For what it's worth, I really liked the tiles they installed at Grand Central in the 1960s- with the occasional red one thrown in. Does anyone know if there was any pattern to the placement of the red tiles amongst the white?

Thanks for the info on the seat cover. I recall it being used to recover seats on some R1/9s.

Were the R/16s the only ones to have vinyl-covered foam rubber?

The R-15's, R-16's, R-17's, R-21's and R-22's had them originally. There was a time that the seats changed on many pre-1959 rolling stock from rattan and velon to vinyl covered foam rubber, before the fiberglass seating was becoming standard replacements into 1969.

I didn't know that the Times Square Shuttle station had a wooden platform for almost 50 years!

It was initially considered a "temporary" operation. Temporary lasts a long time in New York. That wooden platform was a major factor in the 1964 fire.

That may have been what the museum could find but the original vinyl seats in the R-15s were a sort of brownish orange color.
