Amtrak service to Reading, PA

Posted by Chicago44 on Sun Sep 19 07:30:39 2021

I heard that Amtrak plans to operate three round trips between Philadelphia & Reading.

I would like to know if Amtrak will use the Cnter City Commuter Rail Tunnel or the SEPTA Cynwyd Line but restoring this service once again between Ivy Ridge & Cynwyd & building a track connection at Ivy Ridge to allow Amtrak service to operate to & from Reading.

Looks like it would run just like the Keystone/Pennsylvanian trains from NYC backing out of 30th, up through Zoo, but from there take the West/South side CSX line up along the expressway. I wonder if they would double track more of this line. Probably not for 3 trains/day.

They can re activate the Pottstown and Reading stations, and it looks to me like completely new stations in Phoenixville, KoP and Norristown (south of the river in Bridgeport).

Too bad the NHSL KoP project is so far along, as it would be nice to have the KoP branch terminate at the new Reading-service station, and to relocate/rebuild the Bridgeport station to have a better connection to the future Bridgeport/Norristown stop. Measuring the distance it's about 700 ft, so just a pedestrian connector would do the trick.

If we're upping the service from NYC to central PA, I'd start sending some trains express past 30th, and getting real use of the Zoo Junction's "Pittsburgh Subway". Rehab the North Philadelphia RR station, and add back in the pedestrian connectors to the Broad Street Line's North Philadelphia station (which could use it's own rehab!). If you actually make the North Philly station good, and start dropping Philly-bound Amtrak customers there, you take pressure off 30th, and drop half (or more) of the customers off closer to their destinations anyway.
My guess is this would shorten the NYC-Harrisburg and NYC-Reading trips by Half an hour, as there would be no reversing directions, and the actual trip length would be reduced as well.

No, Chipper.

And this is still two decades away, and a "planned" two or three trips in each direction.

Where's the connection?

Huh? Who's going to travel to a desolate neighborhood?

That certainly confirms no use of the CCCT.

And this is the worst route one can take between New York and Reading PA. Never mind slowing the trains down in NJ by making them make all Amtrak stops in NJ.
