I think Astoria to Canal Street was an alternate "branch" of the RR, aside from the one that operated on the Nassau Street line between Chambers Street and 95th Street-4th Avenue. I have seen, "back in the day," R-42 and R-40 side signs that actually indicated "Ditmars Blvd Astoria - Canal Street."

Did they actually relay or laid up at lower level City Hall ?

Look at the condition of the tiling. Awful.

I see vertical metal strips preventing the other tiles from falling.

Bill: It was common practice for certain southern division trains to be laid up during the off hours at the center tracks at Canal Street and City Hall lower level.

This could be pre-chrystie too and that train originated at 71st.

I seen some RR trains short-turn at Whitehall St, not at Canal St.

I recall some trains going to Canal, then going OOS and heading directly to City Hall lower level to lay up. That's what this looks to be...

Most loikely post-Chrystie. Originally, the R-27/30s included, "Broadway," plus the old BMT title on their front and side route curtains. The RR sign would have had a, "B'way-4th Ave." subscript.

Correct. I was doing schedules in the 1970s and 1980s and it was found that around 800AM 2 additional RR trains were needed to carry the passenger loading at the time. No additional cars were available but since the QJ/QB and RR shared the same car type, the first 2 QBs in the AM rush went through to Astoria where they returned S/B but only ran as far as Canal St where they laid up in C/Hall Yd till the PM rush. As it turned out, additional trains were needed in the PM rush so the midday RR layups became PM put ins operating to Astoria where they turned back and became the last 2 QBs S/O 57 St.

Also, in the shoulder period several RRs from Astoria terminated at Canal. I worked on Wall St. at the time and had to be at work by 9:30. I was often frustrated by RRs that ran only to Canal.

Randy, do they still use City hall lower level tracks for layups?

Absolutely. I believe a few W's lay up there midday and evenings.

Most likely a couple of those RRs were the QBs I mentioned.

The last time I was in Manhattan, I recall seeing a couple of layups from both the N and the W running light from Astoria to lay up in C/Hall Yd.

The lower level CIty Hall platforms must be just long enough to handle 8 Standards ?

Yes, pre-pandemic I saw southbound Ws labeled last stop Canal Street.

What the platforms can hold is of no consequence now as long as the 600ft trains that are laid up there clear all the necessary switches.
