Kmart with Astor Place entrance closing

Posted by Peter Rosa on Sat Jul 10 16:24:50 2021

It's best known here for the entrance to the downtown 6 train's Astor Place platform, which dates back decades to the store's days as a Wanamaker. If/when there's a new tenant it'll be interesting to see if it reopens the entrance.
This is a very abrupt closing, as tomorrow will be the last day. Fewer than 20 Kmarts remain.

Probably a lot sooner:

Another chain that fell victim to the times.

If I were running Target, I'd want that location for the Subway entrance and access to both the East Village and NOHO, as well as Greenwich Village to the west (and yes, I know there is a location on 14th Street/Avenue A, but that is over a mile from this spot).

I thought with the two Kmarts on SI being closed that there were no Kmarts anywhere in NYC. Any others left? Kmart did absolutely nothing to improve the customer experience after the Sears merger. Nothing. But they may be able to survive as an online operation selling cheaper items.

Determining the number of surviving Kmarts (and Sears stores) is quite a challenge. Transformco, the holding company for the brands, stopped annoucing store closures and listing store counts in late 2019. Some people have come up with counts by looking at the company's jobs listings for store liquidation temporary help and by checking the sites of third-party liquidation companies.
As best can be determined there are fewer than 20 remaining Kmarts. After Astor Place there will be four left in New York and, curiously, four in the US Virgin Islands.

There are a handful if profitable Kmart locations that won't close until the rest do. 2025 is the year Eddie Lampert must pay back a large loan he took from his hedge fund to keep Kmart and Sears going. It's the ideal time to declare Chapter 11.

Holy crap i am really out of the loop here. I thought Lampert still owned this mess. My last contact in the company was in the Metro Mall store that closed three years ago.

There are also two stores, in Key West and Guam that were turning profits as late as 2016. Like the VI locations, the reason is lack of competition. Excluding Key West, all these stores are located in areas where it is prohibitively expensive to ship to, making online shopping difficult.

The Kmart store in the Bay Plaza shopping center near Co-op City is still open.

I have no idea why. They shrunk the selling floor area to less than half of the available space and shelves are not full. They have very few customers.

The parking lot may look full at times but that is because people who are going into the Mall can park for free.

Eddie is the chairman of Transformco, so he's still in charge of the whole mess.

From what I've heard, just rumor stage at this point, is that the handful of remaining Kmarts are getting very few shipments from vendors and are mostly just selling down whatever stock they have on hand. The company can't afford to pay cash on delivery and its credit is such that vendors won't sell to it on terms. I also would imagine that with so few stores remaining, and with them spread out rather than geographically concentrated, buying in bulk is getting more and more difficult.

If Eddie really wants to keep the remaining ones open he might have to shift to a consignment model, in other words selling products on consignment for vendors rather than buying and reselling them. Fry's Electronics, a superstore chain in California and other western states, had to go onto a consignment model a few years ago when vendors refused to sell to it; while the company failed earlier this year it lasted a couple years longer than it would have had the consignment approach not been available. Doing so with Kmart might buy it a little more time.

I hope that works for Target.

They already have a store at E14th & 1st Av (unless they will close that store).

If they open too many stores in the same market (such as NYC as a whole and elsewhere), they will soon discover they have more expenses (and debt) than income and wind up closing stores (and discover what Kmart/Sears and other similar retailers found out the hard way).

How come Walmart "made it", but a Kmart (nee Kresge five and dime) could not ?

Everyone had a Sears Catalog at one time. It was fun to browse through, with photos, as thick as phone book. In the 1990's they dropped their catalog, when everyone else was stuffing our mailboxed daily with their catalog, though each as thin as magazine. A catalog is what to lead to on-line shopping. Sears cut their own balls off and became irreleavnt. Their closure as anchor stores in shopping malls is also leading to dead malls.

This was already a problem in 2016. They'd be cut off from new purchases from select vendors for months until they at least made partial payments. Once they consumed the cash they got from selling off their real estate assets and their recognized brand names (Craftsman, DieHard, etc) their demise was assured.

Hard to believe that Kmart was still the #1 retail chain in the country as late as 2001.

Target has not announced any plans to close at 14th and A. It's about 0.6 miles between the two.

But I do think the new Union Square location makes Target much less likely to try for the KMart location. That's only a distance of 0.3 miles.

Also, Union Sq./14th Street is a considerably higher-traffic location than Ninth Street and Fourth Ave. with the convergence of the 4,5,6, L,N,Q and R lines.

Many of these Manhattan Target locations are small and have very limited selections, although the one at E117 Street is as big as a suburban store.

I don't know how much space the former supermarket will provide, but perhaps they are going to expand into the basement.

I agree. It's the same food, just higher prices for the rent. They usually had better air conditioning.

Yet people still talk about these so-called "food deserts" but Manhattan's Upper East Side had the same food as working class Maspeth Queens or any neighborhood.

There was a Pathmark on 125 and Lex yet heart disease, obesity and type 2 diabetes were on the rise in New York City's minority communities long before it closed.

Philosophically worse, IMO.

From what I've read, the Sears-KMart merger was intended to fail- Edward Lampert, who took over, intended to not bother with any store renovations or service improvements, but rather, to cash in on the real estate value of the properties, and milk what could be milked from the stores until they died. ort of like buy a grove of maple tress, extracting as much syrup as possible from the trees, while showing them no care, and then selling the land when the trees die.

I also think there was quite a bit of self-dealing here- Lampert not only owned the company, but other entities he controlled were the largest creditors. So either way, he made money!
