The Manhattan grocery stores never had anything special except the higher prices. I tried shopping once near my office on the east side and the aisles were so narrow 2 people couldn't pass, everything was stacked to the ceiling, and the checkout lines were long

I agree. It's the same food, just higher prices for the rent. They usually had better air conditioning.

Yet people still talk about these so-called "food deserts" but Manhattan's Upper East Side had the same food as working class Maspeth Queens or any neighborhood.

There was a Pathmark on 125 and Lex yet heart disease, obesity and type 2 diabetes were on the rise in New York City's minority communities long before it closed.
