The Manhattan grocery stores never had anything special except the higher prices. I tried shopping once near my office on the east side and the aisles were so narrow 2 people couldn't pass, everything was stacked to the ceiling, and the checkout lines were longI agree. It's the same food, just higher prices for the rent. They usually had better air conditioning. Yet people still talk about these so-called "food deserts" but Manhattan's Upper East Side had the same food as working class Maspeth Queens or any neighborhood. There was a Pathmark on 125 and Lex yet heart disease, obesity and type 2 diabetes were on the rise in New York City's minority communities long before it closed. |
