Nice,but uggh all that yellow.

Reminds me of the NYC housing authority bathroom yellow when I was a kid.

My main concerns with these new R-211's is that of the smaller side windows to compensate for those new 58" wider doors, instead of the standard 50" concept, plus less seating in the cars. I am not that enthusiastic about that particular facet of this design though.

The base order for 535 R-211 cars came in at a price of $1.4 billion.

Why did the MTA use the oldest diesels, instead of the two new ones (in blue) to match the color of the R211's?

They have gone way overboard with door width and reduced seating capacity. It will be very hard to be anywhere in the car and not a get a cold draft in the winter outside when the doors open.

These will replace 75' cars, which are quite luxurious by comparison. Staten Islanders are really going to hate then.

The only positive from this is the return to the big full color route letter bullet and bulkhead destination sign.

The open gangway style will also be cool when that gets delivered.

Imagine in January sitting in Tottenville with a cold continuous blast off the bay.

They should think about isolating some of the door sets, perhaps permanently. 60' cars on SI do not need 4 sets of wide doors.

I had mentioned before on this subject that the “regular” R-211s should have the capability of being retrofitted with some sort of inter car passageway if not a true open gangway, then certainly something like the C types had.

IAWTP. Then I won't make the mistake I made on my last visit to NYC in 2009, when I boarded a Lefferts A, instead of the Rockaway A I needed. Fortunately, I realized my mistake before the point of no return, ended up changing at Euclid

My guess is that the wider doors are no more than just the results of searching for ways to make the new cars different. No way the milliseconds they may save in boarding time make up for the reduced seating (although worth mentioning that the removed seats were “middle seats” not near a dividing bar, these seats being the least popular ones anyway (many would rather stand than sit between two people without a divider. Seems now it is 5 people instead of 6 between most doorsets.
