HO brass car questions

Posted by BLE-NIMX on Wed Jun 16 16:35:11 2021

Has anyone here dealt with Brasstrains.com and their consignment services or otherwise sold WP car or MTS online and have any tips? I'm thinking of selling my OEM box R10s and R36s and their consignment and their sales split is 75/25, maybe giving me back just under what I paid for concerning rare items. One single R10 sold for $295 but that doesn't tell me what it is worth as a set or motor/trailer box. I'm not really sure I want to mail these to Ocala Florida either where they are located, just looking at markets

Well, I understand MTS owner Joel Lovitch recently died. He and his wife moved to Florida after years in Middletown, NY.

Be realistic. It may sound glib, but the worth of a model is what someone is willing to pay for it. Also, the market for HO traction, both streetcars, LRV cars, rapid transit - both elevated and subway cars, interurbans, and heavy electric locos, seems to have softened of late. eBay seems to be the best marketplace overall. Also, consider train shows that include traction, people you meet on fantrips that may introduce others interested in a private sale. Estate sales can reveal widows willing to part with the deceased spouse's train collection at any price. A well-known person I've known since high school died early this year was an active supporter of a large museum, not a modeler, but a collector of professionally painted fine models apparently willed to a partner. No, I won't reveal his name.

The largest clubs for electric fans are ERA in New York, and CERA in Chicago. There are others, but traction is always a minority, like narrow gauge lines.

Magazines? Railroad Model Craftsman always carried traction modeling articles, bit it's gone now for years. Model Railroader, hasn't published a traction article for many years. When MR did cover traction infrequently in the past, their standards were high. I can't forget Traction and Models ("Trash" & Models) is long gone. Vane Jones had his heart in it, but the mag suffered from so-so photo quality and poor editing. He sponsored a meet in Indianapolis some years ago. The highlight for me was an auction where I went home with a cast iron decorative plaque that graced the Traction Terminal.

After I read your post I looked at a WP set of three IRT Lo-V cars. one motor and two trailers in mint condition. Included in the box is a WP Car receipt from 1984 for a man in Yonkers for 374.95 plus shipping for 1.50 (!), NY sales tax, total 407.38. I know I paid much more than that, and that number today would probably less than that.

A final example. In a rise of the market, I bought an unpainted postwar Pullman PCC configured for Chicago. A short time later the price doubled to over $900.00. A few months ago I bought the same model of PCC, though professionally painted, from Chicagoland Hobbies for about $400.00 on eBay. They are selling a plethora of streetcars, most professionally painted. These cars must have come from a well-heeled collector's estate.

If you see things you want and can afford, buy it. I believe we are entering a period of inflation and where the market for HO traction goes is anyone's guess since the population is getting older and not being replaced. I have a weakness for finely detailed brass elevated gate cars and I would spend a lifetime soldering brass wire.

Good luck to you. It's not unlike buying seemingly under-valued stocks. You will make mistakes, but hopefully come out ahead in the long run.

If you're mobile there will be a train show & sale this Fall in NJ with concentration on rapid transit. It is sponsored by BERA of Branford, CT

Good to know. The best show I attended was East Penn, based in Philadelphia. Also, TrainFest in Milwaukee every year in November, the highlight being a Chicago-based HO traction club. Plus, the late Joel Lovitch had meet(s?) in King of Prussia, PA. The late Joe Diaz had traction meets in downtown Chicago. The highlight was the master craftsperson Eric Bronsky's HO Chicago "L" structure. I mention (late?) Rich Bosak's suburban Chicago meet(s?). In Southern California a train show in Anaheim, behind the Orange Curtain, featuring a Los Angeles club with excellent HO streetcars. I was once
invited to join, but time did not permit weekly Sunday mornings, which I keep for lazy refresh time.

Finally, I recommend checking ads in Model Railroader, which I continue to subscribe to, a family tradition started by my late father in the middle of the 1930s. Also a late cousin, who built HO Chicago Aurora & Elgin models in the war years. Notice how many people are described as "late"? A truly regrettable trend.

Thinking back to the Yonkers man with $374 Low-Vs that was a good buy. Red Caboose likely overcharged me for my equipment but like you said it was what I wanted at the time. Thanks!

The owner of Red Caboose is well-known in the city for his spotless cleaning of a well-organized store (not!) and where he can indulge his cat and listen to opera all day, raking in money at Neiman-Marcus
("Needless Markup") margin. Where is the competition in Midtown Manhattan? There isn't any.

Hello "RT" !!

WHAT show are you speaking of - and where did you see it posted ?

NOT any show in NJ hosted by BERA that is advertised or that I know of.

As was (the "Mass Transit Modelers Meet") usually held by our NYC Model Transit Assn & BERA for years at Rutgers U and later (sadly)at a Parsippany, N.J. PAL Center - usually in October of each year.

I speak to the show organizers frequently -- nothing of such was discussed for 2021 at all. And none such posted on the NYCMTA Assn. websites or the NYCMTA Facebook site either.

-- HOWEVER -- THERE IS the East Penn Traction Club Show / Meet in late 2021 (usually every 2 years held in in May) but this upcoming EPTC Show / Meet will be held in Allentown PA., (listed as "tentative") on October 7th-9th, 2021. THAT show is being promoted and our NYCMTA Assn crew will be there also.

regards - Joe F

I haven't been down in that dungeon for at least 25 years. I'm surprised it still exists, or does it?
